That's what I was thinking. A significant portion of students accepted into prestigious programs have no publications. If his lack of publications is what makes him believe he has no shot, then I think he's not being realistic.

It's not the publications I'm concerned about, it's the GRE score. With 155V/164Q, I'm pretty average-ish for engineering, but I was hoping to get 90th+ percentile for both sections. Had that happened, I would have applied to schools like Caltech, Princeton, and Berkeley for combustion, but since I don't want to take the GRE a second time and study for it I'll settle for the other middle tier schools. 

 

I did swap ASU for USC, however. Both professors I was interested in working with at ASU are no longer taking students, so I've added USC to the mix.

Well you're 1 quant point away from 90th percentile (165Q).. Most engineering applicants have 150-160V, from what I've seen.

The title of this thread is 2015 Applicant Profiles and Results, so I guess I'll post my Results. My Profile is in post #5. I applied to only one school. It's a big state school that is pretty highly regarded in my area of expertise. I applied only to that one school because I am interested in working in a particular lab with a particular professor.

 

Anyway, I have been admitted for Fall 2015. I am waiting for financial decisions which will come many months from now after all applicants have received their admission decisions.
