Peteroz Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Hello there, I have a 161 in math and 142 in verbal . My GPA is 3.96 from a US university. I am trying to get into a good university for grad school and I am not sure about my GRE verbal part.
starofdawn Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 The verbal will almost certainly hinder your chances of acceptance to a top program, even if it is in the math/sciences/engineering. I highly recommend you take it again and practice reading comprehension and word roots.
peachypie Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I have no idea what your field is, but your quant is fine, the verbal is something to wonder about. I'd retake if you have the time.
jujubea Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Hmmm. In social sciences a lot of places just say a combined 300 is the cutoff. I'd ask folks in the programs you're looking at about it. Also if you pulled a 3.96 GPA from a real university then you should be able to break 150 on verbal with not too much studying. Retake if you can.
MsAmira Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Your quantitative is fine, but I would have to agree with the others on this thread that your verbal is low. If you are able to take the GRE again, I would recommend it. What helped me a lot the online course on Magoosh.com. They provide a lot of practice questions for both verbal and quantitative along with free flashcards of the most common GRE words. I found it to be super helpful!
