slvitale Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Hi everyone, I'm currently finishing up my Masters at Villanova. My dominant interest is at the interface of science and literature--specifically Darwinian theory. (I did notice the thread on post-humanism, which was helpful.) Besides Duke, UNC, and Maryland--all of which have professors with resonant interests--any suggestions? Haerin Shin at Vanderbilt seems to be interested in cyborg theories... Thanks!
lyonessrampant Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Absolutely the University of Minnesota! I assume you'll be applying for English, but it really doesn't matter mostly because of the interdisciplinary Centers here. Check out the Center for Early Modern History and the new Consortium for the Study of the Premodern World funded by a $600K Mellon grant last year. Basically, we're very cooperative about our work, and we facilitate interdisciplinary work. My own dissertation combines literature, Italian studies, history of medicine, and history of warfare (including material work with armor and combat), and art history (hey, 16th c. anatomical illustrations are awesome!). Anyway, our Philosophy of Science department (and an affiliated Center) also supports this work. I know several people who have worked with Darwin and 18th/19th c. British poetry. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to know more. jhefflol 1
slvitale Posted October 17, 2014 Author Posted October 17, 2014 Thanks for the info! I'll check it out.
mikers86 Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 I don't have any additional suggestions, but the benefit of either UNC or Duke is the option to take courses at the other institution, giving you greater access to faculty.
Scottstein Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 I am interested in the narrow niche of literature and technology-specifically the impact of digital technologies on the literary---Duke is one great program I can think of? Any other good places, anybody?
Dr. Old Bill Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 SUNY Buffalo might be a consideration. Their poetics program in particular has a sort of "out there" feel, as they express "openness to critical theory, connections to the linguistic flux and polyphony of modern diasporas, and a keen appreciation of the cybernetic worlds of hypertext and digital media." It seems like a program that would be receptive, at the very least, to a more scientific / technological approach.
Scottstein Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 Thanks Wyatt's torch,I have been thinking of SUNY and you make me feel more keen about it. This competition is daunting .

Scottstein Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Proflorax,my heartfelt gratitude to you for directing me to Krschenbaum.Reading him has not only been enlightening but given my writing sample a real boost. I will treat you if I make the cut.
