Spoonman1089 Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Hello everyone, I took the TOEFL test and I had a grade of 102. However, I had a really low score in the speaking section (18 of 30) and far as I know, this is important to get a TA assistantship. Do you think I could still make it? I have 29 on the reading, 29 in the listening and 26 in the Writing, but I'm not sure if this could help me to make it. What do you think?
xolo Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Hi Spoonman, I'm recalling all my programs just wanted an overall score of 80-90. Since this means average scores of 20-23 on each section, I don't think 18 would be a red flag. Just my guess. The schools know if you are living in the US (assume these are US programs since you mention the TOEFL) your English will only improve. And your other scores are very high.

Following up with this, most schools will understand and encourage you to participate in any free ESL workshops they have. Also, speaking is something that you can improve on by simply being immersed with English speakers and not being afraid to speak up with them. Your other scores are pretty impressive and I'm sure that the lower speaking score won't be a red flag. Good luck!
MathCat Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Some schools do have minimum scores in each section. At several schools I applied to, I believe that minimum was 20 in speaking. You might have trouble getting a TAship, but I would guess that if it does not affect your admission (that is, as long as it's above any set minimum requirement), you would be able to improve your speaking before TAing.

Hani2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 your scores are impressive. However, to get teaching assistantship with the speaking score u have, it is almost impossible. some universities have their own English test for teaching assistanship .
