  1. I've lost track of the number of break downs I've had this semester. Here I was, thinking I could do well in these courses and now I'm facing academic probation at best after my first semester. I'm honestly afraid that I'm going to be kicked out because of my mediocre academic performance. But with combined undergraduate/graduate courses that give double the work to the graduate students, were they even thinking I could succeed in that environment? I guess not...
  2. I wish I was normal and didn't anxiety attacks before a test and after finding out I did horribly. At the rate I'm going, I'm going to be kicked out of my program after my first year. I guess I could be a traveling bard or something instead.
  3. Yeah, I'm going to end up getting kicked out of my grad program.
Better start looking into jobs and moving out.  My SO isn't going to be happy about moving again so soon either.
Why do I suck at these classes so much?

  4. My anxiety decided to act up during orientation, despite how well I've been managing it.  It didn't help that when I bolted out of the hall, the coordinator pointed me out as I went. :/

  5. It's going well on my end. We don't start classes until the 31st but I was able to start in the lab a little earlier than I thought I could. I agree that moving is a drain. For me, it was the driving because the car doesn't have AC and I had to drive it for 500 miles on one of the hottest days of August. Thank heavens I can tolerate the heat!
  6. All ready to start this semester! Let's bring on year 1!

That's a great attitude.  Good luck this year.

  7. Gotta love it when you move states and the health center deems you a health risk because you don't have an immunization that isn't required in your home state.

Yup, happened to me. They didn't accept record of one of my doses because it was administered one month prior to the age their state law says it should be administered.

In my case, it's a booster that I didn't need in my home state but is required in the state I'm moving to.

  8. Gotta love it when your own father tells you that you're making a huge mistake and you'll regret it later. That all of your decisions will leave you to amount to nothing in life. Thanks Dad, nice to know you're so supportive of my life choices. All the more reason to be happy once I've a state between you and I.
  9. A wild apartment has been secured!

About 10 then my Master Ball broke. So I randomly threw another and BAM! :D

      Thanks! :)

  10. I haven't experienced Impostor Syndrome in all its glory yet. But I'm sure once I'm actually doing good work in my lab, it'll hit me like a freight train with no brakes. I'm more anxious about the whole, "Living outside my state for longer than 5 months and no guarantees that I'll ever come back," thing I've got going right now.
  11. 30 days until I'm supposed to move out and I still haven't found a place to live! >.< Going to school out of state is frustrating!

Some apartment complexes I've seen only require 30 days notice that you're ending your rental contract, meaning that the apartments only go on the market 30 days before the move- in date. Keep looking.

I am, and I'm starting to see places come up. Just frustrations because I've never lived outside of my state for an extended period of time. Thanks for the encouragement! :)

  12. Still looking for a place to live near my grad school... I really hate the runaround I'm getting from these places.

I'm looking for a place in NYC as well. As an international student and doing the search from a different country, I feel clueless, poor and anxious lol.

  13. I've been offered it. My school was already giving me money, but they thought to pull me under the GEM name. So I just did all the stuff besides the photo and transcripts.
  14. Grad School #4, why don't you have your ish together? This is the second decision delay email you've sent to everyone who applied.

  15. While it's awesome that I meet so many different people through my current job, I can't wait to start my PhD in the fall.

  16. Good to know. I just feel all types of vexation because both my SO and I are moving to be near my grad school and he doesn't make much at the moment (our current location has zero opportunity for his field). Yeah, the real world has no clue, lol!
  17. How did you manage to do that? Did you show them your stipend pay? Just curious.
  18. Ugh, tell me about it! I understand getting burned by other students, but I'm grad student. Being a grad student is basically a job, so why are you lumping me with the undergrads? An apartment complex wanted 6 month's rent up front because I was a student on a monthly stipend. That would've been worth it if they were closer to my school, but they're not. Besides, I don't have money like that. I just hope as I get closer to my August move in date, I can find better places. TL;Dr, I understand your pain greatly. Let's hope it works out in the end.
  19. Ugh, housing logistics. Why am I putting myself through this torture???

  20. There are apartment complexes that have those amenities, but I don't think there are any near where you were talking. If you find a place in the innercity of Pittsburgh, the buses run pretty well so I wouldn't stress too much about location. Trust me, it's better to be over prepared in this scenario, because Pittsburgh is a college city and everyone is looking now. Get in contact with some CMU students because they would know better than I. Good luck!
  21. Congratulations! I'm glad someone got in. :-)
  22. I'm starting to fear that I won't have enough money to relocate to my program, especially since my job has started cutting everyone's hours. This is just fueling my anxiety. :-(

As a last-ditch effort, I've also heard of people applying for new credit cards with a 0% interest for the first 12 months to charge moving expenses to. Just make sure you pay it all off within 12 months if you go that route.

I would definitely ask if there's any way they could provide some funding before hand. Be frank with them and maybe they can shuffle some funding (say from a first summer) to this summer. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I'll look into these options. I'm going to give it a bit more time before asking outright. I could just be freaking out over nothing. Good luck to you all as well!

  23. Just turned down an offer to be a research assistant that would pay me $12/hr. For what? To attend graduate school. Yup, I'm crazy and kinda want to punch myself in the face.
