Messed up email to POI: slink away in horror and shame or apologize?

Welp, grad student nightmare #456456 fulfilled. I forgot to change a sentence in a form letter email describing what my interest is in that particular professor's research.

She emailed back somewhat snarkily (rightfully so, of course) and I have no idea how to respond. She's not a main POI of mine but I hate having this hanging over my head.

Any advice from others who have gone through the same?!

Apologize, move on.

Not the first time they've seen this happen, I'm sure.

Take this as a lesson in not using form letters, see if apologizing salvages the relationship, and go from there.

Honestly,

If the POI doesn't take it well after you apologized, then, i'm sure you will find a better advisor. While what you did is rude, holding a grudge against a young student for making a fairly harmless mistake is petty imo.

Thanks for the feedback. I've never felt like such a rude doofus.

Anyway, I sincerely apologized and asked if she might still be able to answer questions I had. She sent back a quick email answering and that's that! So I'm sure I came off as dumb but I guess not all is lost.

Glad it worked out. I think most professors are busy enough that small things like this might cause us days of stress and agony but to them, it's over in the time it took the prof to write that first reply.
