Rona Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Having completed my undergrad and MA at CSULB, I know the programs can be very competitive. This varies depending on the program, of course, but just to give you an idea, undergrad and transfer applicant are accepted at a less than 10% rate. The service are of the school is massive, so they get a lot of applications. Your best bet is to stay on top of everything yourself and email faculty often. The administration is pretty impersonal, at least they have been in my experience, because of the large student body population. However, the professors have been nothing but encouraging and helpful. I have found that the professors often give information that the website/administration will not tell you. Hope that helps a bit! Not going to lie.. this depreses me a bit more. I'm really trying o move to Califonia and gettting into grad school is a perfect reason to leave my job and move across the county lol . But do you know of any schools that are a litle less competitive. They need to formally increase the gpa requirment lol instead of giving girls like me false hope lol
Appppplication Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 are you sure about those numbers? I live in California and I googled acceptance results to undergrad at CSULB and found ranges from 30-40% acceptance. Transfer acceptances are usually higher than undergrad which could mean 40%-50% transfer acceptance rate. In terms of the MA programs that's a whole different game and each department accepts at different rates.

They need to formally increase the gpa requirment lol instead of giving girls like me false hope lol Keep in mind, too, that since this thread is geared specifically toward folks focusing in literature/composition, you're probably not going to get the best information for grad programs on Social Work here. Maybe I'm being presumptuous, but I bet that most folks posting here can't give you the details about how programs in your field work. I know that I certainly can't. I would imagine that grad programs in social work put less emphasis on GPA than other programs do. As I believe Wyatt's Torch mentioned, your field experience will probably be a big plus in a potential application. This is all to say that you shouldn't necessarily be dismayed by what you're hearing on this thread. I agree with others that your best bet is to contact someone in the department and explain your situation, and ask them to be frank about your chances. I wish you the best of luck! ἠφανισμένος 1
t1racyjacks Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 am now stonily wondering what it means that I'm so popular in the UK, but probably won't get any US admits  it's a mix of curiosity and deflatedness. I feel like studying it, because that's me

In terms of the MA programs that's a whole different game and each department accepts at different rates.I'm just speaking from my experience about when I was admitted. Maybe the numbers I was shown was specifically for the liberal arts college? Idk. But if the percentages of admits are that high, it would surely explain a lot about what goes down here lol. But yes, every department for grad level admits differently. I guess that's what I was getting at when I gave the advice to reach out to professors rather than the administration. Eta: I was a transfer, so maybe in this case transfer admits are lower? Not sure how it works. Edited January 29, 2015 by jhefflol
jhefflol Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 On another note, congrats to the new admits! I'm refusing to check my email, actually. That's my best coping strategy right now.
Appppplication Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 30-40% acceptance rate is actually pretty competitive for undergrad. That seems to be the most competitive CalState for undergrad. I'm assuming they get an exorbitant amount of applications, but I'm impressed. There are many well-known LACs that admit around that number, yet the Calstate system doesn't get the same type of prestige as other schools with similar stats, which is lame.
kurayamino Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Congrats to the three (!) SUNY buffalo admits!!

This is totally exciting news. Frankly, I know embarrassingly little of the place -I tried to not be distracted by location when I was researching unis, but farmers markets are amazing! mmmscience 1
