RedPill Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 (edited) I've been using Mac for the past 8 years. Sadly, my laptop died a few months back and I've been using a super clunky/old HP Pavilion since then. I'm in the market to buy a new laptop, and I'm wondering if it Stata, SAS, SPSS, R and other quant/qual programs will work well on a Mac. Any thoughts here? Edited November 15, 2014 by RedPill
Roll Right Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 I know that SPSS works well on a Mac. I'm also very certain that R runs well on a Mac. I imagine that STATA and SAS do as well, but I've never used either of those programs. I think you should stick with Mac - no reason to switch teams now. Usmivka 1
Applemiu Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 (edited) To install SAS (by the way I love SAS) on a Mac is a bit of a headache; all the other programs run fine. Edited November 15, 2014 by Applemiu
Crucial BBQ Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I have Stata on my old 2007 MacBook. I have yet to install it on my new Retina so not sure if it works with Yosemite. R does, and works great. Matlab works great, too, in case you were wondering.
juilletmercredi Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 All of them work fine on a Mac except SAS. You need to run a virtual machine with Windows to run SAS on a Mac; I use VMWare, you can also use Parallels. It's kind of a pain in the butt but personally I don't use SAS much unless I'm running some more complicated models with a macro. You just need to make sure you get a sufficiently powered machine - my personal MacBook has 8 GB of RAM and that's fine; my work Mac has 16 GB of RAM and it is GLORIOUS. Stata works fine on Yosemite - I just installed Yosemite on my own computer about a week or so ago and I've been using Stata wonderfully. SPSS does too.
