cassette
My status in the research portal for UBC still states "Received by administrator." My two other schools have made decisions. There must be a problem with my application, right? Surely they are not still deciding. I emailed the address listed for Scholarships and Awards at UBC's Grad Department 4 days ago but have not heard back. Thoughts on who I should bug next? It could mean you're an alternate, or they haven't decided yet. I got an e-mail from one program that I think was an alternate notification (it sort of seemed like a rejection letter, but they said they'd notify me if one became available, so I think I was an alternate). They didn't update the portal. It still says "Received by administrator", even though I've declined my offer from that school now. UBC did notify me already, but it's NSERC. cassette
blueivy
Important Question: Is it possible to transfer schools or departments/fields of study with a CGS-M? The award holder's guide suggests it is possible to do both, but we need the approval of the school(s). I've realized that i have no desire to pursue my original degree plan anymore and am looking to see whether I could be admitted to a different program at the same school. I only have 8 days to accept the award however, and i'm unsure what to do. Has anyone ever heard of someone switching their degrees/programs? They'd both be SSHRC (social science) related areas with connections to economics, but i don't know if i have heard of anyone doing this before. strange_quark
I think it is fine as long as it is the same institution and the same agency (SSHRC in your case). This is based off correspondence with the UofT student awards office.

Ask the school if they would allow an NSERC department transfer, I asked UVic if I could transfer one from biology to geography and they said yes no problem. I applied to both programs though and got admitted to make sure it was doable.
Jay's Brain
I would also like to know this - and if you do know, how did you find out? Hi not sure if you've been answered, but I received and accepted my CGS-M to York. It was for CIHR.

CarefreeWritingsontheWall
Albeit a random question, but one that's been burning on my mind. I was declared an alternate at McGill for CGS-M, SSHRC. For those of you who had their 'alternate' status turn into an offer, did you receive an email saying that your status had changed/is that something I should be looking forward to? Does anyone know the last date my offer status could be updated?

I think I'll have to reject the offer if I receive one later than May. I'm already 1 year into a 2 year master's and I don't want to drag it out past next April in order to hold onto the award. If I'm not mistaken, I have to take it for a full 12 months, no? Really sucks to be stuck waiting. Looks like a ton of people got their alternate statuses changed really quickly. E.g. if your degree only carries on for 8 months after you get it, you would get 2/3 of the funding. I'm not positive about this, but you should look into it. I caught a few people saying something about that. I was really hoping for summer funding as the job market has been a total flop and I can only count on an RAship for four months that's hourly pay. I know my supervisor wouldn't entirely leave me hanging, but I know they're waiitng to hear back from SSHRC as much as I am. Like a lot of other people here, I have no idea where I rank on the waitlist - as it's already been two weeks since most people found out about CGS-M SSHRC, I doubt I'm high up there. blueivy
you might be able to speak with your school. Toronto has had a really high acceptance rate for their SSHRCs this year, so while in the past people still did get offers on the alternate list into may or june or around the 3rd week of april most commonly, this year they said that it is highly unlikely that anyone still on the alternate list would get an offer. which means that other schools might be in the reverse scenario if everyone is accepting toronto. i will be turning down ubc in a couple of days, in case anyone is on the alternate list there and hanging on
blueivy
just turned down UBC SSHRC. Hope someone on the alternate list here gets it and it makes their day!

blueivy
What are people selecting as their start date? I'm confused as to whether I should pick May 1st or September 1st...can I even choose May 1st if my program starts in late August/early September?
TakeruK
You select your start date to be the date closest to your program start date. No, you may not select May 1 if your program does not begin until September (Unless you are starting early!)

Siosaur
Are you currently at UVic and applying for PhD programs, or is the MSc the program you've been accepted to? I'm applying to M.Sc. at both, actually I just found out I got the NSERC to UVic as well!! UVic is a master's of geography (landscape ecology) and UBC is a master's of zoology! Although I don't know how many jobs there are in zoology these days...
