It probably depends. The closer to the deadline you take the exam, the likelier it is that problems will arise (simply b/c you you'll have less time for troubleshooting). Personally, I didn't have a single problem with ETS and I sent out TOEFL and GRE scores to 8 schools. I've heard of scores going missing, either because ETS didn't send them or because the school misplaced them, so it does happen, but I don't think you can say it *usually* happens. Most schools will allow you to fax them over a copy of the score report you get in the mail until the official one arrives, so a late score report shouldn't really be a serious problem. Anyway, it's advisable to follow up with the school on everything, not just the GRE scores. Transcripts, LoRs and other materials can go missing too.

I had a couple of schools lose my GREs. With that said these were the same schools that seemed to lose my LoR and Transcripts, even when all the schools were sent them at the same time. Usually a quick email to the Adcom is all you need to make sure they received it. Keep in mind, that even though the scores are sent electronically to your grad schools, they are only mailed out twice a month.

GRE reports arrive at schools all at once twice a month. ETS will send all scores for that period of time when the scores are requested every two weeks.

I personally never had a problem sending my GRE scores...

One thing to keep in mind, is that your schools may have your GRE scores, but sometimes it takes them months to post it in the receipt of your application. So, even if you send your scores in July (like i did last year), my schools for the most part, didn't post the receipt of my scores on my application until about Oct/Nov.

I sent the scores in in September and didn't have any problems. Like pps said, if you wait until the last minute, you may have more problems.

Mine arrived quickly, likely because I didn't procrastinate taking the GRE. I took it over summer break so I could focus solely on that test. Also, I ordered my scores early, as in September, so ETS wasn't as flooded with requests when they got mine. I imagine in December and January they get very busy and it would be easier for yours to slip through the cracks. My advice: take it early so you can send the scores early. And don't worry about it getting there before your application. I found many schools started my file with my GRE score.
