  1. In order for the score to be "official" it needs to be mailed through ETS and they will not be able to use your photocopy. Even if you don't know where you are sending your applications you do get 4 FREE ones that are sent after you take the exam. Even if you end up not applying to the school you have nothing to lose. Also many schools lose the scores, you may have to send them a second time.
  2. I can only speak about Ithaca, NY, but it is an extremely LGBT-friendly community. At times it seems like they are more gay people than straight people. I did my undergrad about a half-hour away from there and I would go to the gay bars there all the time. It's a great place to live.
  3. The only way to cancel a score to cancel the entire exam when taking the test. It's not the end of the world if a school gets your score. If you retake the test they'll see the other score anyway.
  4. Agreed with both above. If you can afford to apply now and see what happens then do it. If you do well on your GREs you probably will have a chance. Re:Recs. It's probably not the best idea to make them your LoR. If you do at minimum make it 1 rec. If you really think it's going to be stellar, you can usually get away with sending a 4th letter.
  5. I'm going to the Fair because I was told by the locals that it is a religious experience.
  6. I'm living on the other side of uptown -- in the area where uptown and lynlakes intersect. It's really nice and there are a lot of cool things in the area. My department registered me for classes so I ddin't have to worry about that kind of stuff.
  7. No, just my departmental -- week after. I was told specifically by my department that it's useless for my program. I don't need to sit through a 2 day lecture on how not to plagiarize.
  8. Moving from New York, I've been told I have an accent and that Minneapolis is safe. People also see my New York plates and give me extra room on the highways.
  9. Same here, but I have orientation the week before.
  10. Agreed. This liquor tax and 2 AM last call is killer....I miss NYC already.
  11. They told me that since the car is in my Dad's name and that my permanent address is my childhood home, the DMV told me to have my Dad write me a permission slip. Saying it's his car and that my permanent address. They want me to keep this letter with me when I drive.
  12. Word of advice -- call motor vehicles. I am not getting new plates or new license for Minnesota, but I found out that I need to carry proof of other residency when I drive should I be pulled over. So call your state's dmv, so that way you are aware of the potential pitfalls
  13. I've cleaned my new apartment because moving made it look like a bomb went off.
  14. If you are sending the rest of the application materials soon, send the application. You want them to receive that before they receive the other parts, since many use the application as a way to "open your file". I personally submitted my applications around this time last year.
  15. I've been doing the try to meet people thing, but so far it hasn't been that successful. I've decided to take this time to be a tourist and explore the city.
  16. It is as generic as possible. It lists your sections, scores, how many times you took it, and where it was sent.
  17. First off, if you are a foreign student (which I have a feeling you would have mentioned) then I wouldn't worry as much since they understand it is not your primary language. Generally speaking math/science programs care more about the quant score and english/social sci programs care more about the verbal. That said, in terms of grad school you only need a "not bad score" since, in most cases, all the GRE does is get you past the immediately tossed out pile. Check a couple of your programs websites and see if they post average scores. If you are the average or above, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
  18. Keep in mind your phone will only work when the power is out if it is a traditional landline. Cordless phones stop working the minute the base stops getting electric power. Since most people tend to have cordless phones they tend to forget this.
  19. Despite what others may say I was one of the people that sent in my application in August and had all the pieces of my application sent by September. It was great because at some of the schools they needed me to resend things again (because they lost it) so I had plenty of time to catch up. Also, one of my schools ended up accepting me in October even though their website didn't mention rolling admission.
  20. You may be better off looking into Master of Human Resources programs. With the PhD in I/O, you will probably get a lot of courses to transfer and could complete the degree in 1 year.
  21. Yeah, I've been looking uptown. Celeste reccomended Uptown, so that's where I'm looking I'll have a lease by the end of the day.
  22. I had a couple of schools lose my GREs. With that said these were the same schools that seemed to lose my LoR and Transcripts, even when all the schools were sent them at the same time. Usually a quick email to the Adcom is all you need to make sure they received it. Keep in mind, that even though the scores are sent electronically to your grad schools, they are only mailed out twice a month.
  23. The unhelpful answer is it depends on the bank and it depends on the amount of money. General rules of thumb - once a check is deposited, it takes 3 business days for it to clear, then you have access to the money. Money deposited in the form of cash is available immediately. Wire transfers, unless you are depositing more than 50,000 are generally speaking, not worth the fees. You are probably best off opening the account with some money in dollar bill form that will definitely get you through the 3 business day waiting period (i.e. deposit $500 in cash and the rest in check).
