artselfie
Hi everyone, I had posted this in the GRE forum but I think it's more suited here. I'm graduating from my public ivy this spring, and looking at going into museum studies/ art history and curation. The schools I'm applying/ have applied to are: Parsons The New School Christie's Education New York University (NYU) School of Visual Arts (SVA) Bard CCNY Any idea of what GRE scores would be v good for these grad schools? Or even what they're looking for in general with regards to grades and scores? I just got back from my GRE and I know I have 161 Verbal and 155 Quantitative (waiting on the writing portion) but this was just my practice exam without any studying. I was planning on studying a bit and taking it again in three weeks. Can someone please tell me what GRE scores are considered very good for a museum studies/ art history/ curatorial studies/ curation/ design history program? Or at least what GRE scores the schools I'm applying to might be into? Thank you so much!~ Edited January 24, 2015 by artselfie
museum_geek
It's nice to see another museum studies applicant on the forum, I thought I was the only one! I'm mostly applying to schools that are west of the Mississippi, and my focus is on American material culture/ethnic studies rather than art history, so I can't really speak too specifically about your GRE scores. In general, you scores should be fine for museum studies programs. I got a 163 on verbal, 150 on quant, and 5.5 on writing, so I'm in the same range as you. I don't think many programs care about the quant score, so I'd say as long as you're above ~80th percentile or above on verbal you shouldn't have to worry. I was 92nd percentile with a 163, so I'm sure a 161 is above the 80th. You can also check out the results search to find some examples of scores/gpa, but there isn't a whole lot out there. Here's the NYU results as an example: http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=museum+studies+nyu&t=a&o=&pp=25 Only a few people have posted their undergrad stats, but it's better than nothing. Anyway, that's my two cents. Best of luck!
neongolden
I know quite a bit about the MODA program at Columbia... and I know that GRE scores were really not all that important a part of the application there. Your scores really sound fine! I had 165V155Q5.5W (as an expat) and I think I was on the btter side of my admitted class. Focus on your statements and give them two extra edits rather than taking another GRE
starbean50
I was admitted into the MODA program, however did not land up attending due to another offer. My scores were 165V, 160Q and 5.5W I wouldn't worry, your scores definitely sound strong enough
