SeanDDavies Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 How important is the fit with the advisor vs. the program/school fit? I have yet to find a reliable source of ranking schools. The school where I got offered admittance is not as well known as some others but the advisor is a great fit and she is a great mentor. I am wait listed at another which is well known but I don't think my chances are very good at this point. My career goal is academia.
nugget Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 In response to your comment posted on the duplicate thread.... OP: "I dont know the rankings. I searched US news rankings counseling psychology but only clinical and psychology come up which might be different than counseling." Do some of the profs for the clinical programs teach some of the counselling courses in the counselling program? You may find a lot of cross over. If this is the case, the rankings of the clinical programs may be a pretty good indication of how strong the counselling psych departments are.
SeanDDavies Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 The clinical program is in the psychology dept. the counseling is in education dept. At least most schools that I'm lookin at.
juilletmercredi Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Both are important. Which one has more clout totally depends on who the advisor is and the programs you're comparing. Comparing a top 10 school with a top 30 school is different from comparing like two schools within the same range; also, some famous professors have extensive networks that will get you where you want to go regardless of where you are coming from (assuming that you are also good). At this point it's not much of a "choice" since you have only been accepted to one of the two.
briarcliff Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 (edited) School rank is pretty irrelevant. As long as the program is funded and has a solid EPPP pass rate and high (APA accredited) internship match rate, then you should be fine. Make sure that students have an opportunity to publish, and make sure that the internal practicum (clinic) and external practicum are going to offer you the ability to work with a number of different populations. ^^ assuming that you were asking about clinical otherwise ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Edited March 8, 2015 by briarcliff
SeanDDavies Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Thank you everyone!!! Briarcliff- (I love your avi btw ) are you basing that off of planning for a career in the clinical field? Would your opinion be the same if the career I was planning for is in research or university setting?
briarcliff Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Thank you everyone!!! Briarcliff- (I love your avi btw ) are you basing that off of planning for a career in the clinical field? Would your opinion be the same if the career I was planning for is in research or university setting? I'm interested in pursuing a joint clinical/research career post grad, and I definitely feel like research match is the biggest factor in my decision making process. EPPP pass rate, internship match, funding, and research match were really the only criteria I used in my decision making process (oh and location too!)
SeanDDavies Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 What would you say is an acceptable EPPP and internship match %? What is unacceptable?
briarcliff Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 What would you say is an acceptable EPPP and internship match %? What is unacceptable? 90% was my threshold, but it's really w/e you're comfortable with.
