Does anyone know about the program at Wayne?  I was accepted and am attending the GIS on April 10th.  Just looking for opinions on the program before I fly up there.

The program is great! Very research based and the area in detroit (midtown) is really fun :)

About 4 students in my cohort went to WAYNE for undergrad.  They say its a well established program.  Their big knock on it is that the teachers are not very personable at all.  I will try and get more info for you.  What specific questions you want me to ask them?

Oh, that's a bummer that the teachers aren't personable.  Hopefully they're good people. lol.  I just want to know if people are enjoying the grad program.  It has an aphasia lab and a stuttering lab (the two fields I am most interested in), so I am about ready to accept their offer.  Just want to see if the current students find it to be a solid choice for a grad program.  I am also waiting on Michigan State University...idk what I would do if i got in there, too.  lol.

Thank you for the info!  I assume all programs are a lot of work, but it'll be worth it in the end......i hope. :)  I've heard scary things about Detroit.  I'm from LA so you can imagine the horror stories I hear.  I look forward to visiting on April 10th.

I moved to Michigan as well for grad school from Northridge, CA (not too far from where your moving from).  I am on the west end of Michigan about 2 hours from Detroit.  Been through Detroit twice since moving here and yes it can have rough areas, but all my classmates who went to Wayne state and who are from the Detroit area never have anything too bad to say about the area.

That's good to hear.  I will also be looking for somewhere to live, so hopefully I can find a nice place in the area.

So far, Wayne State seems really organized. They have replied to my emails really quick and the staff seems nice. The information session was helpful and some of the current graduate students talk to you and you can ask them questions. They all really seem to like it as well!  I am most excited about the clinical experiences that this program offers.

As far as the area, the building that most of our classes is in is wedged in between the Detroit Institute of Art (museum) and the Michigan science center. So the area is pretty populated but as always just be aware of your surroundings.

I've lived in the metro Detroit area my whole life and some suggestions on good places to live would be Royal Oak or Ferndale! Both are highly populated with young people, both have interesting restaurants and bars, and they're safe and not insanely priced. Royal oak is about 15 or 20 minutes away from campus so not a far drive at all.

Hope this helps!

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response. Definitely helps out a lot in terms of expectations of the program and area.  Will look into Royal Oak and Ferndale, and I appreciate the suggestions.  :)  Can't wait to fly up there for the session on the 10th!
