_byhisgrace Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 So I'm a sucker for school supplies. I'm the one that you'll see browsing the isles completely in the off season just because it makes me happy, lol. I was wondering what supplies do you think are "must haves" for grad school and others that have worked well for you in the past. I'm trying to come up with a solid list and not have too much excess. Thanks! mimblewimble, jennyjam2014, bindlestiff and 5 others 8
jmjslpca Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 (edited) Oh yes, a laminator is a great one! Amazon has one that is regularly marked down below $20! Scotch Thermal Laminator 2 Roller System (TL901) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0010JEJPC/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_daVpvb1ZXDWAT It's $32 right now, but I got it for $16.99! Not really a 'school supply' in the traditional sense of the word, but I'll be getting a small laptop. I also love school supplies, so I can't wait to hear what everyone else plans to buy. SLPosteriorCricoarytenoid Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Isn't sad how laminators excite us? I have a laminator that I am excited to use more too! I recently put it to use and laminated some notecards and it was fabulous. I think I am going to keep an eye out for potential therapy supplies this summer at garage sales. I know some grad students who have found some awesome games and stuff at garage sales for next to nothing!Â
jmjslpca Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I found several old posts related to this that are very helpful! Several things that were mentioned in these posts were: A good planner Digital recorder Dollar bin toys Clipboard with storage inside I also read a post where someone suggested hitting garage sales to look for good toys/games to use in therapy
hopefulslp2b Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I thought I was the only one who looked for stuff in garage sales!! Those kids have great stuff!!!! I can't wait to use all this great stuff! it's funny because all slps I know love pens! They even talk about them haha so not sad at all! Just a common SLP trait
Charlotte C Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I just bought a fancy planner that i am hoping will keep me organized in grad school!  My current list: -laminator -stylus -keyboard case for my iPad -pen light -label maker -digital recorder  I've been stalking boards for ideas because I am a school supply addict (but it looks like I am not alone!) Being an ABA therapist, I have a carload full of games and reinforcers that I have collected over the past few years.. I definitely recommend the thrift stores to look for materals, but check to be sure all the game pieces are there! That goes for yard sales too
ahirsh7 Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I was a teacher for three years so I have a lot of this stuff already  I have boxes of children's/young adult books plus a laminator, label maker, tape recorders, games, etc. I already own a laptop so the only things I'm planning to get at the moment are a planner and pencils.

Charlotte C Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 What kind of planner did you get? It's called the Simplifed Planner by Emily Ley, it was honestly pretty expensive but I really like that it splits each day seperately and divides them by the hour. Plus it is gorgeous and I wouldn't mind looking at it every day! But looking around there are lots of good options online for planners just depending on what your organizing style is.
kayyyyy_ Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Why'd you get a laminator? Is it super important to have?
ahirsh7 Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Why'd you get a laminator? Is it super important to have? You'll find it really helpful to laminate certain activities so that you can reuse them and use them over long periods of time. I don't think you really need one until after you're hired though!

_byhisgrace Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 I'm getting a laminator! so excited:D Â I do a lot of crafting and I already have one of those, although I probably need a new one because I've worn it out, lol. It is awesome and I love it! Â

I never thought of going to garage sales for supplies. Looks like I'll have to become even more organized now so my apartment doesn't end up looking like a daycare. Lol

That goes for yard sales too I just looked up your planner because that's also another one of my addictions, ha! It seems like a really good one. I have the Erin Condren now, but I'm not a big fan of it. I have used the Lilly Pultizer one for years and I swear by it. It's been by far my favorite. I'm going to look into the one that you have before I go back to that one.

I'm trying to figure out what I really need in a planner.Â
Charlotte C Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I've never really been an active planner user, but I was looking into the Erin Condren one. What about it do you not like? I'm trying to figure out what I really need in a planner. I looked at the EC and it has the days split up into morning/afternoon/evening I believe. I didn't think this would work into our schedules with classes/clinical work etc. but it all sort of depends on what works for you! Plum Paper Designs on Etsy was another planner that was recommended by others online and you can customize it
_byhisgrace Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 I've never really been an active planner user, but I was looking into the Erin Condren one. What about it do you not like? I'm trying to figure out what I really need in a planner. It's just like what @Charlotte C said, I'm not a fan of how the days are split up and I don't think it would fit our normal schedule. Something that shows more of the times of day and being able to customize those would be a lot better! The EC really didn't have a place for me to write down my "homework" specifically. It had several notes pages in the back, but I would have preferred a designated area (I'm a little OCD). It was also expensive and I was sad that I spent so much on what I ended up not liking. It's really a toss up. I also know friends who love it.
jmjslpca Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I'm really digging the Emily Ley simplified planner. The 2015-16 academic daily (August-July) will be available next week!

I ordered it from a little paper store that got it early and got it in the mail yesterday! I've heard it will sell out really fast when it is released online, just FYI!

_byhisgrace Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 Also, I know at Walmart and Target they have $1 bins of random things, so if you are starting off with no therapy supplies or toys, then that would be a good place to look as well! It's never too early to stock up!!Â
jmjslpca Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 What are you guys thinking for hauling books, etc around? Backpack? Messenger? Something that rolls?
