What do I need to score on the GRE?

Hey guys! 

I am a speech path major with an overall GPA of 3.77 and a major GPA of 4.0.  What would score on the GRE would make me competitive?

Try contacting the schools you are interested in applying to, and see what their historical numbers are for their successful applicants. Even better, try contacting some of the current graduate students. That is a much more convenient way of establishing what range of scores fits your programs, because, after all, not everyone will be applying to the same schools as you! 

And remember, the other parts of your application (LORs, personal statements, grades, experiences, etc) can offset a lower GRE if everything else is substantial and fits the requirements for the schools!

I know that to be deemed "competitive" schools like at least the 50th percentile in verbal, which is a 150. The higher the better. Combining your quantitative and verbal score to 300 or higher should make you competitive, but it depends where you want to apply. Some schools say 300 is a minimum, some say it's competitive. As Jay's Brain pretty much said, it depends where you apply, because everyone is different. If you're really strong in other components (ex- your major GPA) you may not necessarily need a spectacular GRE. Again it all depends where you want to go. ASHA's Ed Find has program listings and GRE ranges, but it doesn't hurt to email the schools you are interested in applying to to find out the most recent statistics.

Generally you want to shoot for 158+ on both sections, ideally 160+.

As the other above posters mentioned it all depends on your over all application. If your GPA is 3.8+ great extra curricular activities, volunteer and have experience in this related field your avg GRE 150+150=300 should work. It varies from applicant to applicant. You need to be overall good.

You will recieve a lot of different answers, and there is no "right" answer. 

For myself, before I took the GRE I decided I would continue to retake until I got minimum 150 V, 150 Q, and 4.0 AW.

After seeing my scores and my strengths/weaknesses, I decided to retake it and set my goals on a realistic upswing of: 150Q, 160 V, 5.0 AW. 

Obviously the higher the GRE score, the better off you are. Again, I think a 150 150 (or 300 average, could be a 148 and 152) and a writing 4.0 are pretty good minimums.
