kjweber Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Has anyone else applied to the CU Boulder Geography Graduate program? I know admission decisions probably won't be out for a while but I am just so anxious to hear! Does anyone know about the time/how the geography department notifies students? From what I have seen on this site from prior years, the website doesn't seem to get updated very often and mostly you hear from email. Thank you in advance for any advice! Good luck to everyone!
PrincessBride Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 Well, I've applied to the CU Boulder PhD Education program. I was told if I didn't hear anything by April 1st that I should contact the school. I think they do tier acceptance where they inform/ admit their top picks each month, in hopes that they save places for "the best". Hope this helps soothe the waiting worries. Best, PB

I also applied for a PhD in education at CU Boulder and I didn't catch any of that which could mean that I just missed something. Will concentration did you apply for?

I read a PDF somewhere and I was told this by a prof in my Master's program that this is how a lot of schools do their accepting. Also, I read someone on here said they spoke with someone at CU Boulder who said that March 15th is when they try to send out acceptances. I applied for Curriculum and Instruction. Is this your top choice school?
TheMonkeyOnMyBack Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 It's definitely in my top 3 and I applied for the policy track. It's nice to know that while there somebody else applying for the same school that we will be and different programs so we can encourage each other without any reservations

I'm anxious to hear an answer. I saw a post today that said something along the lines of CU usually sending out notifications around this week. I just cannot believe that it would be this soon. Let me know if you hear anything. Thanks, PB
desert bee Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 I too have applied to the Geography grad program at Boulder. kjwebber, what is your focus? Excited and anxious!! Good luck! ~DB
UP_Morning Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I apply for the Geography MS program, too. Waiting

desert bee Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) Awesome! Me too - but not meteorological climatology. I'm interested in climate change and using that data to facilitate rehabilitation of ecosystems. I love climatology as well as soil science. Pretty much anything in physical geography. I worked on developing permafrost as an indicator of climate change last year. Who is your prospective mentor at Boulder? Edited February 5, 2016 by desert bee

I worked on developing permafrost as an indicator of climate change last year. Who is your prospective mentor at Boulder? That's awesome! My POI is Mark Serreze. What about you? I am interested in Arctic Amplification and its affect on northern hemisphere weather patterns. I participated in a research expedition up in Churchill to do some climate change research at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre and just fell in love with the tundra. I am really interested in anything related to the Arctic and climate change
desert bee Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Wow, that's awesome. Mark is also one of my POI. Sounds like you have a really good chance. That's totally in line with his research. I'll be glad to do anything in the physical geography department as far as research goes. My interest in permafrost is the additional GHG's released under the influence of sudden warming. I wish you the best of luck! Keep me updated! Hopefully we will work together on these issues!!

Tidus Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Mind if I gatecrash? Technically I'm an Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences applicant at Boulder instead of Geography, but planning to work on polar climate/oceanography, so kinda excited to find people looking to do similar stuff. P.s. Saw Mark Serreze do a talk a year or two ago in London. Seems like he'd be a good guy to work with. Also good luck with the applications guys.

I have very few people to geek out with over the Arctic and climate change, so I am excited to hear about other people who have the same interests! I have never seen Professor Serreze speak or lecture, but we spoke for a while on the phone last year and he was very nice and easy to talk to. Best of luck to you guys!!
jjw Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I also applied to CU's geography master's program. Getting nervous waiting for an answer but luckily a few other schools have showed some interest. Looking to specialize in hydrology. Good luck everyone!

Does anyone know when the department is expected to send out admission decisions? Every day I check the results page, I see more stuff from CU Boulder but never the geography department (although there was a Ph.D. result a couple of days ago). It seems like its mostly Ph.D. results right now.. I am trying not to go crazy waiting to hear back! This is a dream school/program/POI situation for me so I am really anxious to hear back!! Thinking good thoughts for us all!
stormgasm Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Oh nice! This discussion is perfect! I applied to the CU-Boulder Geography program (PhD) with an emphasis in climatology as well. My POI is Peter Blanken, but I am definitely interested in Serreze too. I haven't heard back from the department yet, but Peter did send an email to gauge my interest in working with him this fall. I'm assuming that's a good sign, but what do you think? Also, Tidus, I'd like to work heavily with ATOC, especially Darin Toohey. I see you're doing a little bit of oceanography as well. I'm finishing up my MSc in geological oceanography, so it's nice to see someone that's also interested in the ocean!

Stormgasm - That sounds like a great sign that he emailed you to gauge your interest! When did he contact you? I see two Ph.D. results from Boulder on the Results page, so it seems like the department has made (or is starting to make) their final decisions. It has taken everything in me not to contact my POI! I am considering one other school that has shown interest in me, so I just wish I knew what my POI was thinking so I didn't miss out on another opportunity. Boulder is definitely a far better match for me than the other university. The anticipation is killing me! Keeping my fingers crossed!!!
kjweber Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 Also -- has anyone else spoken with Mark Serreze directly? I am wondering how many people are interested in him as their main POI. I am looking to study the effects of a changing Arctic cryosphere, so he is really the best suited (and only) POI I selected. The other professors are great as well but he was the only one I spoke with on the phone.

He sent an email on Tuesday, which I did not see or respond to until about 5 or so hours later (yay clean lab...). In it, he wanted to gauge my interest since they are making decisions very soon (clearly that's in progress according to the results page). What other school are you looking at, if you don't mind me asking? I'm still waiting to hear back from a few other schools right now. Yeah, I hear you! I'm starting to stress out! 5 hours ago, kjweber said: Also -- has anyone else spoken with Mark Serreze directly? I am wondering how many people are interested in him as their main POI. That said, I wouldn't mind working with him either. Actually, that would be awesome! However, I only selected Peter Blanken as my POI, IIRC. He's the only one that I talked with over the phone.

Sounds promising with your application. So far Boulder is my only offer, but one I'm super happy with, so hopefully see you there at some stage. I've done a little bit of atmospheric trace gas measurement work in my current job so would be cool to chat to Darin about it at some stage. Think I'd be focussing more on the modelling side of things at ATOC though. Edited February 12, 2016 by Tidus
jjw Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Have any master's applicants heard anything from CU yet? Starting to get really anxious waiting for a response...
kjweber Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 I haven't heard anything yet but am feeling really anxious as well! Based on what I see on the results page, it looks like schools are giving out their Ph.D. results first. I have seen some master's results but not much. I emailed a current master's student at CU studying geography and she said she heard back late February by email. If you search CU geography results from previous years, it seems people pursuing master's degrees heard back between late February and the second or third week of March. So hopefully we'll all hear soon! The closer it gets, the more nervous I get... Good luck to you all! 4 hours ago, jjw said: Have any master's applicants heard anything from CU yet?
