Someone posted on the results page that they were accepted to the CU Geography master's program on February 12th.. If that person is reading this, would you mind posting your POI and subfield?

Seems as though the department has already sent out some acceptance emails... I wish people who were accepted would post their advisors so the rest of us have an idea of our chances... Trying not to feel bummed but getting the feeling bad news is on its way to me :(

I received an email from the department that said, "We are happy that you are able to visit the Department of Geography at the University of Colorado at Boulder." However, I have not received anything saying whether I have been accepted, rejected, or even granted an interview. That's all I know though.

Waiting is literally driving me crazy!! I can't stand not knowing. I know I did everything in my power to get accepted but I still have this horrible sinking feeling that I'm never going to get into a grad program :(

I feel the same way, JJEdwards! I just want to know either way and it's killing me knowing other people have heard back yet I haven't.. It's the worst! Who were your POIs and what subfield are you interested in?

I haven't heard anything either. I have been obsessing over it a bit too much so just trying to chill on it. Hang in there! Your future is bright no matter what!!

kjweber It's maddening! My poi is Jim White - I am interested in doing research regarding paleoclimatology/ geochemical effects of climate change on permafrost regions. I had a Skype interview with him that went well..but I am really awkward and shy in person so I just hope that didn't ruin it for me :/. I am seriously in love with all of his work..I want to do what he does more than anything!

How about you??

I know how you feel. I feel the same way about my POI Mark Serreze and I am pursuing a master's in the climatology subfield. I have been following his work for years and used a lot of his research in my undergraduate studies. Working with him would be such a game changer! I talked with him on the phone last November for a long time and we seemed to get along so well and have a lot in common. I even volunteered on an Earthwatch Expedition to do climate change research in the sub Arctic to get some experience. He said I have a good chance of getting a TA position but said he can only take on one or two students. So I know the competition must be fierce but I guess I felt like I sort of had some kind of a chance since he said I had a good chance of getting a TAship. Who knows. Working with him would literally be a dream come true. However, I know I need to stay in the mindset that I will end up where I am supposed to be! It's really hard though when you want something so much!

Thanks for posting here and replying to my posts. I have been going crazy and it is nice to know that there are other people out there going through the same thing. It is nice to feel supported! :) Really hoping that we all get accepted!

I agree! It's nice to know that You aren't the only one going absolutely insane! I hope you get in to Boulder! Which other programs did you apply to? I also applied to Wyoming, Utah, and Oregon. I wanted to apply to more but I couldn't manage to afford any more :( It's insane how expensive it is to potentially just be told "sorry but no". I want any rejection letter I get to be delivered to my house by a medieval type delivery man on a horse.

Haha, that would be awesome. Thank you, JJEdwards! I hope you get into your #1 place as well! I actually had a really hard time finding professors who were pursuing research that was exactly what I wanted to do. I am really interested in how Arctic Amplification is affecting Northern Hemisphere weather patterns. I only found Mark Serreze at CU Boulder and a professor named Steph McAfee at University of Nevada, Reno. I have a B.A. and not a B.S. so if I wanted to apply to other climate change programs, I would have to go back and take a couple chemistry and physics courses. That is my plan B, I suppose. A lot of other programs I was interested in told me that they wont have funding for another year or two, so my options were pretty limited. Boulder is my first choice but if I only get into UNR, I would go there too (even though I hate Reno... the campus is gorgeous though!). If I don't get into to either of those schools, I will probably try and get more research experience in the Arctic/sub Arctic areas or take some more classes at the local community college so I can apply to more M.S. programs next year. I totally know what you mean with the whole expensive part of applying to schools. Even if I found more programs to apply to, I could probably only afford a couple more! Well, I hope everything works out the way you want them to! I will be crossing my fingers for us all!

Another week and no one has heard anything? Has anyone spoken to the geography graduate secretary or any staff members about when results might be sent out?

Kind of. Here is a transcript of the message I received from them:

Hi Ms. Weingarten,

Thank you for the message. Once AGU's Ocean Sciences meeting finishes, I'll start planning my trip to visit the department.

Great!

With that said, I'm curious about my status as an applicant. I have not received any word regarding the department's decision to accept, reject, or even interview me.

We don’t do formal interviews, but you are one of the applications Dr Blanken has identified that he is interested in and so that is why he is inviting you to visit.   You are correct that we have not communicated with you about acceptance.   I don’t have all the pieces – the committee is giving me only a few names at a time, so you are still in the “holding” pattern.    A lot of the delay we have at this time of year is that faculty are waiting to hear from another applicant – perhaps because they have limited funding.   Applicants don’t have to answer until April 15.   I don’t know what the committee of Peter Blanken is doing but my guess is it is something along those lines and we all just have to wait it out.

Would you be able to provide any information on the matter? Going off your previous message, I would assume that I've at least been granted an interview, but I want to be sure be continuing any further. Thank you very much.

You should probably talk to Peter directly about your status, but he is obviously interested or he would not be inviting you.  We only have about 7-8 of these travel awards each year and he picked you!   Coming to visit is kind of like him interviewing you and you interviewing us……

Hope this helps you.   When is the AGU conference?

Karen

My questions are underlined and purple-ish. So yeah. I'm looking for a ticket there now because Dr. Blanken recommended that I visit over my Spring Break since he'll be traveling and whatnot.

Thanks! Did you just email her by the email address on the website? I tried emailing her months ago to confirm my application had been received but she never responded.. Not sure if I had the right address..

Thanks! It definitely did. I emailed her and she said she hasn't received a list with my name on it but hopes to get more from the committee later today or Monday. So I am guessing I didn't get in.. :( I guess it'll be nice to just know either way and not have to devote any more mental energy to this! Congrats on your interview! Good luck!

That doesn't necessarily mean that you didn't get in. It's possible that they just don't have enough travel awards for all of the students that are likely to be admitted.

True, however I just checked my status online and it says, "A decision on your application has been made. You will be contacted with further details." I pasted that into a Google search and the manual for the CU online portal showed up and listed that response as a denial. So I guess it wasn't meant to be! Good luck to the rest of you!
