I'm applying to the sciences and I'm quite surprised that Yale has a diversity statement which is separate from the statement of purpose and is optional.

Is anyone filling them out? Are they also considered as a part of the application? How do separate diversity statements factor in admissions?

The diversity statement is used to figure out funding for the student (Diversity Fellowship?). Since it is optional at Yale, I'm expecting it to be the same thing and used towards funding.

That's what I heard diversity statements were for. I had written them for California schools last year, and as best I could surmise they were only for funding considerations and had no effect on acceptance decisions.
