When EdFind stats are lower than what the school mentions

Recommended Posts

So I e-mailed ASHA and they said that edfind is updated every summer and fall with recent data from the past application round. Funny thing is how some top schools mention on edfind that they accepted people with below the average scores for GPA and GRE.

Can anyone comment?

Yes, exactly.  There will always be people above and below the average because that is exactly what an average is.

I think @speechie94 means more that some of the people accepted are well below average-- low enough that you wouldn't expect the school to accept them.

I kind of take it as they have something else that compensates for the score. It seems like most schools have a cut-off for GPA and GRE, but it varies by school and it's possible that the applicants were able to slip past the cut-off because they evened out in some other area (e.g., they got a 145 Q but a 167 V). That might be enough for the schools not to immediately overlook them.

I'm still surprised when I look on ASHA and see low scores of any sort for a program with low acceptance rates -- that doesn't add up to me.

I know the schools definitely take into account what school/program you're graduating from. Dr. Ricketts at Vandy said they accepted a double major chemical/mechanical engineering student from MIT with a 3.4 GPA (something like this haha) because he knew the program there was more rigorous than a CommDis student with a 3.9.

Exactly! It's really puzzling and makes me wonder if the LORS, SOP, and resume of the application has something to do with.

It might also have to do with lower scores being their own students. Or there is one student with low scores that brings everything down, but they had cancer or were in a bad car accident or something that would merit a couple semesters with low grades.

I have seen some crazy statistics on Ed find. For example, some of the schools I looked at had such a vague GPA range that I knew the information wasn't accurate. They would advertise something like a 2.94-4.0. I think it is mostly up to the school to send their most recent information. I would look in the FAQ section for the programs you are looking at. Those mostly have accurate stats.
