  1. I agree with @intotheairwaves, cost is likely an even bigger factor than time. My dog is coming with me because I already have him but man is he expensive! He's a tiny guy so he doesn't require a lot of food compared to larger dogs and the lower doses of heartworm, frontline, etc. are cheaper. But because of time constraints he costs a lot still - he uses a grass potty thing inside that I have to buy replacements for and he goes to doggy daycare once a week (and I pay a premium for one that separates tiny dogs from small and large ones). A puppy or more energetic dog would likely need more daycare or a dog walker. Plus my rent is higher and I pay for insurance for him because otherwise I wouldn't have the money if he got hurt. He's definitely worth it for me as both stress relief and a comfort since I live alone, but there are other things I can't spend money on because of it. I'd just get a cat if I were you.
  2. It's the same program/application but they have an optional 6th semester specialization. When I asked them about it, they said to make sure I included my desire to do it in my application in order for them to be able to arrange placements. I'm worried that if a lot of people included this then maybe they won't have enough placements, so they wouldn't offer everyone who wanted to do it admission.
  3. Did anyone who applied/got accepted at Jacksonville apply for the six-semester program? I received an email from them stating they'll have a decision for me by the first week of April (which does that mean by the 1st or 8th lol) and am wondering whether that impacts it since they likely only have so many placements available.
  4. I would say as far as getting your CCCs no. However, being a newer program might come with drawbacks, You will be a bit of a guinea pig. I wouldn't say this is enough to deter me away from a program but if you want specific placements - like acute care - they may not have established connections to provide these. So I'd ask both the program and any current students questions if possible!
  5. Are you speaking of programs that have candidacy status or ones that simply aren't accredited at all? If it's a program that has no ASHA standing you won't be able to apply for your CCCs.
  6. In countries where English is a second language, speech therapy programs are going to be either bilingual or in the primary language. They are certifying you to do therapy in their country, the program isn't intended to train English speech therapists. The populations in those countries will require bilingual therapists so the program wouldn't be in all English. Not to mention the ASHA recognition @EESpeechie mentioned. I'd suggest looking into the mutual recognition countries if you're interested in studying abroad, although you still may have trouble finding a Master's level program that doesn't require a Bachelor's in CSD. I think students from the US have had the most luck with Australian programs from reading these forums!
  7. I know the feeling! I'm checking my email so much and then getting disappointed at 6pm every day we don't hear back. It would be so helpful to know how many they asked to do videos and how many they plan to accept for early admission. I read from a script taped to the computer screen at times for my video so I'm sure you're fine! I only wish I had mentioned they were my top choice in my video, but I'm hoping that came across by how enthusiastic I was about their program in my video and personal statement.
  8. Thanks! I didn't know we wouldn't hear again until May 1st - that would kill me! Last year it looks like they sent out two waves in March so crossing my fingers that they do that again, and then you'll just hear final decisions by May 1st.
  9. That'd definitely be nice! It seems like they've had a hard time making decisions this year so I hope that doesn't delay them too much. It's scary to think that these videos are what are making or breaking their decisions. Do you happen to have any idea on how many people they admit for early admission?
  10. Yours is probably great as well! Mine was typical of what I saw on Youtube but I get worried that others are doing something amazing. And there's a video manager under your account, I noted how many views I had when I submitted it and watched for it to go up. Mine had 4 extra views this morning! Hoping we have an answer soon too because this waiting is killing me
  11. Thanks and you too! I was so nervous about mine, I thought about trying to redo it today since I submitted it in the middle of midterms. There honestly wasn't anything to change anyway but by the time I woke up they had already viewed it! (please tell me I am not crazy and not the only one checking that lol)
  12. It might also have to do with lower scores being their own students. Or there is one student with low scores that brings everything down, but they had cancer or were in a bad car accident or something that would merit a couple semesters with low grades.
  13. I know! It was really hard cramming it into two minutes. I did a practice run and wasn't done with 1/4 of it before the time ran out haha. It was good because I think I was able to focus on what was important, but I'm not sure what they are looking for - especially since I had already answered their questions in my personal statement. Good luck to you, I'm sure yours will turn out great! I've had mine done since this morning and have been too scared to submit it haha. It's like I think I'll come up with a way to make it better as soon as I send them the link. I hope we all hear good news soon!
  14. Question, when did this glitch happen? I have not heard anything from them since confirmation that they received my supplemental application.
  15. Thank you! Good luck and same to you! I don't have a mac but my boyfriend is going to let me use his, so I've got that figured out. I wrote down everything I want to say and decided the best way was to just sit in front of a camera and say it. I saw some really creative video essays on Youtube but I wouldn't know how to do it with what I want to say. Hope it's enough!
  16. So I definitely freaked out before I realized this email went to my clutter for some reason! I'm glad I'm considered a top ranking candidate but I also have no idea whatsoever on how to do this. Videos/technology are not my strongest suit unfortunately. Does anyone know of good and free video software haha?
  17. CSDCAS lists Salus University as accepting applications until April 1st. Checking their website looks like they do rolling admissions, so I'd email them to see if they're still looking to fill any spots since they are a newer program. It's also possible people who accepted spots earlier will start receiving acceptances from other schools, so a waitlist might be an option. http://www.salus.edu/Colleges/Education-Rehabilitation/Department-of-Speech-Language-Pathology/Application-Process.aspx I also know Jacksonville accepts a second round of applications until April 15th too. But don't give up hope yet! You haven't heard back from everyone, you could still get in! If not, taking a semester off and waiting for Spring admissions isn't the worst deal either. It'll be like one last, extended summer vacation
  18. That makes 4 of us. I was expecting it but really loved FSUs program, so bummed.
  19. It's less the experience being listed on your resume and more about how it influenced you, which can be addressed in your personal statement. If I could go back, I wouldn't change being super involved even though I do think it had a slight impact on my grades. But super involved doesn't mean just being in an org and volunteering. I've been on the executive boards of a couple different organizations, volunteered for two summers at a special needs camp in addition to community volunteer work, had an internship for one summer, helped a professor with research from the start to finish, and was actively involved in NSSHLA. I addressed how all this related to me now being a better student and future slp in my personal statement. However, as important as these experiences were to me, they're just the icing on the cake to grad schools. I have an average for slp gpa and above average gre scores, with great LORs in addition to all this. Extracurricular experience alone won't get anyone into grad school. But if you have two identical cakes (aka gre/gpa) except one has icing and the other doesn't, you'll probably pick the cake with icing. It's all really dependent on the school too.
  20. If it were me, I would retake it. What did you use to study for it the first time? Magoosh has some apps that are great and you can study when you're stuck in line somewhere or any other little bits of free time. I also made flashcards with all the math formulas and carried those around with me - they have those little ones on a key ring if you know what I'm talking about. You can check on the website to see what areas and levels of the exam you struggled on. I found that really helpful when I retook it as it acclimated me to the way the test worked better (i.e. my second quantitative section was almost all 4 and 5 level questions, I freaked that I was doing terrible because the questions were hard and I was off my game for the rest of the test).
  21. I assumed they just entered the wrong school. I would hope no one would just lie on there - if it had been a school other than mine I would have been worrying that I hadn't heard back until I realized they were the only one who posted anything.
  22. I wouldn't worry too much about this until multiple students do it, last month someone posted an acceptance for my school saying how they were so excited, etc. before the application deadline even passed. I knew for a fact our professors hadn't started even reviewing applications yet but if it had been another school I would have been having extra anxiety for the past month!
  23. If everyone is doing the same thing, then no one in your class really stands out. I think it is important to be involved in something but it doesn't have to be the same thing everyone else is doing. I'm a member of NSSLHA but I've held positions in other student orgs. I think the leadership experience I got from those outweighs what I would've gotten out of holding positions in NSSLHA. If you have conflicting things that are a better use of your time, I would pursue those.
  24. I would email the school and ask what length would be preferable if you want to go for the longer one. Generally I would say 500 - 700 words or two double spaced pages, with 12-point Times New Roman font and standard margins.
