Hello,

I am just looking into alternative options in the event that I am not accepted to SLP this year and have came upon the Utah State university 2nd Bachelors degree program. I am looking for advice from non-US students as to whether it is even possible to enroll in this course, and if it is did you find that tuition was outrageous? The out-of-state tuition seemed pretty reasonable compared to other schools in the US so I was hoping that this may also be the case for international students (wishful thinking!).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, I am not familiar with the term of "2nd bachelors" does this mean we actually get another Bachelors degree or is it more of a certificate of completion?

Thanks!

I'm not from outside of the US, but I just completed this program last Dec., and there were definitely international students in it.

If you do the program as outlined, you do indeed get a second B.S. at the end which is a nice plus.

I could be wrong, but I would imagine that the online student tuition is the same no matter where you live as long as you're not in UT. You could always call and ask before you proceed further down that road.

Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for the reply! Wow, that is great that you actually get a second degree.

Did you enjoy the degree? I was hoping to complete it full time for the three semesters, did you find the courses manageable?

I did enjoy it for the most part. I did it in four semesters because I decided to take ASL as well. It was a good, organized program. I found it manageable, but I think it always depends on what else is going on in your life.

(ASL was by far the hardest class that I took. I've heard that can really vary with instructor, though.)

If you start taking classes summer semester (begins May 9th), you can do the program less-than-FT and still finish by April '17. What you would do would be to start in non-degree status and then as soon as your application gets processed (relatively quickly in my experience), you'd get converted to 2nd bachelor's status.

With your listed cumulative GPA, I would recommend taking no more than 3 courses per semester to maximize your chances of getting a 4.0. It's priced per credit rather than per semester so there's no cost difference in taking 4 semesters vs. 3.

I'm not an international student, but I agree with @Crimson Wife and @slporbust2016.  I do remember having several international students in my classes, including at least one from Canada.  I'm finishing my 2nd bachelor's degree at USU this semester, and really liked the program.  Not only will you get the 2nd bachelor's degree (and no the degree doesn't say "online"), but you also get a really good foundation for graduate school.  I have learned so much through the program.  From what I can tell, USU's 2nd bachelor's program is well regarded in the field and among graduate schools.  I'll be starting grad school in the fall!

I was working part-time, and wanted to be sure to get that 4.0, so I spread my course load over 2 years (6 semesters) instead of one, taking 2-3 classes each semester.  Also, if you have any ASHA pre-reqs to meet, you can take them while you're at USU!  That would be courses like chemistry, statistics, etc.  The only course I had to take that USU didn't offer was neuroanatomy, but that was just a (new) specific requirement of my grad program, not something everyone needs.  I'm taking neuroanatomy at UWEC (also online) this semester, and it's really good too.

Best of luck!

So is the post-bacc GPA averaged with your other degree?

It depends on the grad school, as to how they evaluate your GPA.  Some schools will use a straight average to get your cumulative GPA, but others weight your last 2 years more heavily.  Some schools also put more weight on major GPA (COMD courses).  If you have specific schools you're interested in, look on their websites, email or call them to find out what they are most interested in.  Open houses are also a great opportunity to get that sort of information!

Just wanted to chime in and say that I completed USU's 2nd Bachelor program in August 2015 and was accepted to a brick-and-mortar grad school for Fall 2016. I not only feel well-prepared, but an admissions committee thought so, too :).

I had students in my classes from Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, etc. International students are definitely welcome.
