One of the topics that I frequently encounter is that some programs prefer applicants directly from the BA. A lot of websites don't give a directory of their graduate students. What schools prefer students directly from the BA? Is there a way to do more research into this?

Penn State! I have a friend who was admitted to their PhD program with an MA already in hand, and she was directly informed that the adcomm had to jump through a bunch of hoops to make the offer.

While my school (UT Austin) accepts a mix of students, the pool is usually more weighted toward applicants just finishing a BA (primarily because the program has an MA portion that isn't meant to be terminal).

This is purely conjecture, but I have heard that it is difficult to get into BU with an MA, as they have their own MA program, but I am not sure if that is true. Additionally, on UIUC's website it notes that the majority of PhDs in their program have their MAs from UIUC, so they may prefer to accept MA/PhD applicants.

I've heard that said about Penn State. She must have been a can't miss applicant. :)
