I applied to a master's program that had rolling admissions since September, when the admissions cycle started. I submitted my application in early November...haven't heard back yet. I contacted the office in January (when the 8 week time frame they had given was well past) and was told to expect an invitation to interview shortly. That was late January, now it's late March. I'm not sure what to do. Clearly, I'm on the waitlist, but why not tell me this? It's also aggravating because when I first applied I received and email from the admissions coordinator saying I was a competitive applicant, and to email her further with questions. Should I send another email? I'm worried that doing so might expedite a rejection.

Wow. That experience seems horrid! It doesn't seem like they're keeping you in the loop at all, and that they are inconsiderate of the applicants' time and energy. When I send emails to my graduate programs they respond almost immediately or in a couple hours at most, and so I'm surprised that they would take months at a time to notify people when the application has rolling admissions.

However, I would say that maybe there's something that is distracting them away from your application. Maybe they are receiving an unprecedented amount of applications or maybe they're waiting a little bit longer until other schools release their admissions results first. In either case, I would take this as a sign that their team is not very efficient and I would reconsider going even if you get interviewed and accepted.

Do you have other options?

Yeah this time of year is super annoying! I didn't find out a school didn't have my transcripts until I emailed them 2 days ago and their deadline was Jan 15th.....Look you have been waiting for almost 4 months now for a decision. I would send another email saying how you are looking forward to coming to this program for the fall semester and were curious on the status update on your application. If that makes them reject you, then I think you dodged a bullet. People even grad school prof/administration need to be held accountable and if your email makes them uncomfortable it should. They have been blowing you off.

I echo this statement. I'd be leery of their ability to properly support me if they've been this unorganized.

Again, I echo this. It's been a long time, and I don't think a reasonable person would criticize another kindly-worded email.

Thanks for the responses you guys! The thing is, i've read/seen through the results page of other people getting rejected or admitted during the time i've been waiting. So, the admissions team is going through applications, just not mine. Super frustrating! I think I will send them another email soon. Last time I asked for an update, the head of admissions was super kind and apologetic. It's a really good program with amazing job placement--i just dont want to get rejected. Haha but then again, I feel as if I already am.

Got an email saying to expect an interview within the next few days. This probably means next week, given that the Easter holiday is soon.

Welp, here's hoping it works out!

Maybe there's some sort of crazy circumstances leading up to these delays. However, even if there are, it certainly would help if they communicated a bit better.
