merci Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 Hi! So I just accepted an offer to a school on Wednesday. They had offered me $6500 and before I accepted they had said to send them any offers other schools had made and they would try to meet or exceed those offers. The other school that had accepted me had offered $6000, which I have not yet declined, and today they upped their offer to $10,000. Would it be uncouth of me to send this revised offer to the school I have already accepted an offer at to see if they would be prepared to offer me more money?
rising_star Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 No, it wouldn't be uncouth. But, I wouldn't be surprised if they decide not to give you more money in spite of this.
GradSchoolTruther Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 If a department is only offering $6,500 (yr?), how are you going to get by?
merci Posted April 11, 2016 Author Posted April 11, 2016 It's Canada Tuition for the entire program is about $10,000. I am also planning on applying for SSHRC funding and TA'ships
eternallyephemeral Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 Congrats on your decision! Although I think you could ask for more money, and you could explain that this other school offered more, what I think is more valuable in this situation is the opportunity to get SSHRC and/or TAships. Do they have RAships? Work-study programs? Do they allow you time to find jobs outside of school? How easy is it to get a co-op position? (these are all coming from your other post, sorry for stalking) The 3,500 is absolutely extremely valuable, I wouldn't disagree with that. But on top of asking, definitely look into how easy it is to get these other funding opportunities, and think about applying for some provincial scholarships if they exist as well (in Ontario we have OGS and OGF, maybe there's something like that where you are).
DealBreakerC Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Wow, $6,500 is next to nothing and $10,000 is a thin estimate even for Canadian schools. Have you factored in how much you will be spending to have a roof over your head and other import costs of living? Now if that $6,500 is purely scholarship and you will be getting TA/RA contracts on top of that then you should be okay (still apply for tri-council awards).

Definitely makes me feel like I made the right decision to forward them the revised offer LOL The $6500 is an entrance scholarship. I've talked to my supervisor about other funding opportunities and he has said I should apply for a SSHRC and that TA/RAships are available. There are also graduate fellowships of $6000 available each term and private awards. One of the research opportunities also has funding associated with it. I'm also planning on doing a couple co-op terms while doing my masters. As well, I plan to apply for a student loan to have my bases covered! I should be fine.. I got through my undergrad without much help besides my savings! I am in Vancouver (which is also where I did undergrad) so living isn't cheap, unfortunately!! Edited April 15, 2016 by merci

That's definitely impressive, Vancouver is very costly. I've been living in downtown Toronto for two years, and trying to just get by on summer and part time work, without going into my savings. I think youve got it figured out!
