cooperstreet Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I'm applying to Ph.d. history programs this Fall, and am trying to beef up my SOP. On my CV I have listed that I presented a paper at 5 conferences--one of which was a big national conference, the other is a big time special issue conference in London. I also published a book review. So, should I mention any of this on my SOP? Or should I just leave that stuff on my CV (which I am sending with my application)?
a fragrant plant Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Only mention the one(s) that has influenced your research/career goal. If none of them I'd just leave them on the CV.
spectralScatter Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 if you presented at a national conference, definitely mention. if you will present at a national conference, definitely mention. if you just visited, mention how this was an inspiring experience.

Thanks. That one sample SOP up on Berkeley's site mentions an award. That would obviously be on a CV so I don't see what the problem is by mentioning a conference.
rising_star Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Are these conferences ones that accept only some abstracts/papers or ones where everyone who applies gets accepted?

Just don't list awards, explain the role and significance of the award in your career interests. For example, I have a prestigious fellowship. I definitely mentioned the hard work I had to do to achieve said award, and how it represents my preparation and interests to attend graduate school. gl. Edited December 5, 2009 by chemmastr
