Hey guys, are there paid internships in SLP? I was offered an unpaid one for the Fall in a big city, but I'm not sure whether to take it because of financial issues and loans from undergrad. However, it's an amazing opportunity and would really add to my application and resume.

I wish. I'm sure there may be some but they would be a huge exception to the norm. But if you are trying to apply to schools next cycle I think it would be worth it if you had another form of income. Same with grad students. No one in my cohort has a paid one and we have three externships to do. And of course we have to pay tuition for the credits. Lucky places getting free labor by us paying students.

I have had a paid internship in the field for the past year and a half.  Of course, I don't work on any speech related goals. However, I tutor children and teenagers in academic areas with ASD and strictly adhere to their IEP's (academic section).  In addition, I run a social skills group for three teenagers (high-functioning Autism).  The pay is the only negative aspect about the internship.  I am gaining a plethora of experience and it has really aided in boosting my application.

So, what I am trying to say is that there are some paid internships out there. A year and half ago I was calling places around my area for volunteer opportunities and it turned out that one of the companies had a part time paid position available.  Search, search, search because they are out there.

I think the rules vary from state to state.  Many SLPs frown on this, but in California if you have your bachelor's in CD, and are in the process of applying for your master's, you can work with a credential waiver.  Here they pay anywhere from $26-35 per hour.

I have heard that waiver positions strongly prefer those who hold a SLPA license. Might be hard to find one without that license.

Not where I am!  ?

Edited to add: I'm in LA
