kaydaybug Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 I am struggling to decide what school/program I should look for that will give me a degree to do therapy and counseling. For the longest time I planned on getting a degree in clinical psychology, but realized how competitive this degree is, especially in North Carolina. I am asking you all for recommendation on degree and schools where I could get a masters degree in some sort of counseling or therapy. Thank you, advice is greatly appreciated.
louise86 Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 I work as a therapist in an outpatient clinic. I have a masters in social work. Some of my colleagues are LPCs (Licensed Professional Counselor) which I think requires a masters in counseling. I know some people who are LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist), but they seem to be less common in my area. I think there are specific marriage and family counselor programs for that. kaydaybug 1
elizabeth25 Posted June 16, 2016 Posted June 16, 2016 I'm not sure if you're looking to stay in North Carolina, but if you're open to moving, New Orleans has 4 different universities that offer Counseling degrees. UNO offers a MEd in counseling and I believe you can choose a focus of either school or clinical mental health counseling with their program; I did my undergrad there and had a great experience with them. Loyola and Our Lady of Holy Cross both offer an MA/MS in counseling, but I'm don't know too much about either program. LSU Health Sciences Center offers a MHS in Clinical Rehabilitation & Counseling and has an RSA grant if you are looking for a program with a scholarship/funding- this program was the best fit for me and I am starting in the fall. LSU's program also extended the deadline for applications this year, so they are still accepting applications for this fall. I think the fall deadlines for all of the other programs have passed. I'm sending you links to all of the schools in case you're interested. Good luck! http://www.uno.edu/coehd/educational-leadership-counseling-foundations/counseling-graduate-programs/counseling-masters.aspx http://css.loyno.edu/counseling/programs-study http://uhcno.edu/academics/calendars-catalogs-and-schedules/master-of-arts-counselming.html https://alliedhealth.lsuhsc.edu/rc/
