MemphisMeli Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 (edited) So, I'm applying to the PhD program where I am a current undergrad (not able to relocate and no one else near here has the PhD program I want). Of course, this means I know my POI. I am in her lab. We had our final lab meeting today and she was talking about how one of the grad students will be out next month for two weeks for internship interviews... and all I wanted to do was ask her if I was going to get to interview with her for the PhD program LOL I didn't of course, but oh dear! Thankfully I won't see her for about 3 weeks because of the holidays and a conference trip... I hope I hear something before then so I don't end up biting through my tongue every time I see her! Anyone else applying in place and know your POI? How do you deal with NOT asking? Not dropping hints? Not becoming a general PITA? LOL Edited December 23, 2016 by MemphisMeli misspell
rising_star Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I dealt with this eons ago when I applied to do my PhD at my current MA program. What made it super hard not to ask is that admitted students were visiting before I heard anything about my application. I can't remember how/why I managed not to ask anyone about it but, I did. At some point, my PI made a point of telling me that they hadn't actually reviewed my application yet, probably when someone asked me in front of some faculty if I was going to stay to do my PhD and I had to honestly say that I hadn't been admitted yet so couldn't count on it. Part of what helped distract me is that I had a MA thesis to complete and other applications I was waiting to hear about... I don't suppose you have a thesis or publication you could pour your soul into? angel_kaye13 and MemphisMeli 2
PhDorBUST Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I feel dumb but gotta ask...what is POI ?
Yanaka Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 I've been interpreting it as "person of interest" as in faculty you'd like to work with/to mentor your research, but I might be wrong on the exact translation. 5 hours ago, PhDorBUST said: I feel dumb but gotta ask...what is POI ?

Working on 3 different studies, helping two other undergrads with their studies.... sure lol Oh, and getting ready for another 19 credit hour semester to include teaching two hours a week. I'll be plenty busy, but with ADHD, that may or may not be enough to distract me
ruilinch Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Well, I would think that knowing the POI makes everything easier. I mean, she/he is right there so you could definitely follow up with emails to ask about how it is now? I know your point. It is better not to look too pushy, but I guess they could understand now is a pretty special stage and that it is only because you want it so badly that you might appear intense? If asking about it really helps with your nerve, just do it! You needn't worry so much. If your professor is not comfortable discussing this, they will let you know. I doubt it they would hold your asking about it against your application.
