It is a great program and thanks. I have my fingers crossed.

Good luck with yours. Did you apply to the BGSU American Culture Studies program?

No I did not apply. I really dont want to live in Ohio another 5 years tbh. However, I was tempted by OSU's comparative studies program but I ended up not applying.

Yeah that is something that's been on my mind. It's the best in North America if not the world for pop culture but the do I want to live in the middle of corn fields question has crossed my mind. I'm from D.C. originally but relocated for undergrad so over the last 4 years I have  acclimated to smaller towns. For me I think the resources will be worth it for two years.

Also BG is only 7 hours from where my family is now living and 5 hours from Toronto where I have a lot of friends. So I can go visit once in a while with ease. But with all that said I do understand not wanting to stay for the legeth of the PhD program.

It isn't a terribly lengthy drive from Detroit, and there are some nicer parts of Detroit, despite its reputation.

Honestly, the bigger concern I had with Bowling Green is that seemed to be more affected by those crazy Great Lakes weather patterns, or at least more affected than one might experience further south in Ohio.

There's actually little lake effect here compared to, say, Toledo, or Cleveland. It's a pleasant place, weather-wise.

That's interesting and good to hear. :)

I had some colorful experiences when I visited, but it was also in November, and a blizzard was on its way in. Glad to see that my experiences were atypical.

That is good to know. What is the social scene for grad students like? Do you stick mostly to your own cohorts?

There is a push to integrate programs through our Graduate Student Senate holding mixers and events, but my personal experience has been to reach out of both my cohort and graduate school in general. I'm friendly with my cohort and have one very close friend from it, but my closest pals and social connections are a couple of years above me. I sought out people outside of grad school on purpose, in the greater Toledo area; there's a community of artsy young professionals that keep me sane because it allows me to step outside of grad life on the weekends. It's both a blessing and a curse to hang out with other graduate students, right? You gotta choose wisely ;)
