Accelerated passage from Msc to PhD

Anyone here has done an accelerated passage from Msc to PhD in the social sciences? What are the pros and cons of doing that? Do you know what are the critieras of the university before doing something like that?

What do you mean by accelerated passage?

It means that you complete the coursework load for the first year of your master's program, then go straight into a PhD without writing a master's thesis.  Usually, it is for students who have excellent grades and they have to be supported by their school and faculty supervisor.
