samjones Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 does anyone know much about the Rutgers CITE (and/or general Anthropology department) admissions process? i saw that some have been invited for interviews and wondered if anyone knew the ratio between how many they invite for interviews and how many they accept... also, i'm still really curious about the program in general, so if there are any folks around who are already students of the department (especially CITE), please speak up!

I went to Rutgers as an undergrad and majored in evolutionary anthropology (and took some cultural anthro classes as well). I don't know much about their graduate program admissions and what not, but I know a lot of grad students and they seem to like it. Personally, I loved the department. There are a lot of cool professors (and some not cool ones- watch out for Jack Harris, he's a great teacher but a scum bag of a person) and a bunch of awesome field sites (especially in Kenya). Unfortunately, I know that the department is always having all sorts of budget issues so watch out for that. Hope this helps!

Oh, I suppose his name might really be John. We always called him Jack. He has a tendency to hook up with underage prostitutes in front of his students when he's in the field. I don't really know Dr. Goldstein, but I was on the bio side so I didn't meet a lot of the cultural faculty. Yes, from the few classes in cultural I took I think they definitely integrated feminist theory. Rutgers has a wonderful feminist community (which I was very involved in) and it spans several departments-with Anthro and women and gender studies being the primary ones. Anthro is also located on Douglass campus, which until a year or two ago was an all female campus/school. You might want to talk to Dorothy Hodgson. She works with Maasai populations mostly but integrates a lot of feminist theory into it. Also, I think she has some grad students who do more urban anthropology if that's what you're into.
punkybugsy Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Does Steklis take grad students still? If I have to make applications next year I'd be interested in working with him.
samjones Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 Does Steklis take grad students still? If I have to make applications next year I'd be interested in working with him. lizgb may know the answer to this question, but this is a question you could ask prof. steklis himself. you could use this question as a way to begin a "relationship." all the faculty have their email listed under their name on the anthro website! good luck!!

Right, I saw the status so, I was hoping Lizgb might have more info, thanks
lizgb Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Right, I saw the status so, I was hoping Lizgb might have more info, thanks I've never heard of him before, so my feeling is no. I don't know everyone in the department though, so I could be very wrong. I'd send him an email.
Ibn Anthropology Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Hey, Has anyone heard back from Rutgers as yet? I was also interviewed by Profs Goldstein and Magana earlier this week. I know they said that it would be the end of Feb before we'd hear back from them but just asking! Nerves :s Good luck everyone!
samjones Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 i haven't heard anything. but i think you don't have to start worrying about rejection until a week into March. relax (about Rutgers, at least) until then!! =D
samjones Posted February 25, 2010 Author Posted February 25, 2010 i felt pretty certain that acceptances and rejections would've been reported by now! i mean, how'd people on the waitlist get to know but not the acceptances and rejections. i'm starting to feel like all the work i put into getting face time with the department and such will still leave me with a rejection. ugh. has anyone heard anything? and who is the wait-listed person, please?

Yes, it's strange. anybody received an offer or rejection???
Ibn Anthropology Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 I haven't heard anything as yet either. Waiting, waiting, waiting. And losing a lil hope too.
mgergan Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Hey there, mabel here. Im new to the forum but was kinda relieved to see that there are other anxious souls like me (quite oxymoronish) Ive applied to rutgers and duke for anthro. Is it true that if you havent heard from them by now, that you havent made it. Others seem to be getting called for interviews and have even been accepted. Should i just give up now?
samjones Posted March 3, 2010 Author Posted March 3, 2010 Hey there, mabel here. Should i just give up now? well, i don't know with all certainty ( i am only an applicant to rutgers myself and i haven't called because i don't want to be pushy) BUT the anthro dept. at rutgers interviewed applicants over the first few days of february. when my interview was ending, i asked when they expect to get back to students with decisions and they said they hoped to make them by the end of february. note that i didn't say they said they'd get back to students by the end of february. i know when i hung up the phone and for the proceeding couple of weeks i was certain they'd be getting back to people around the end of last month... but when they didn't, i thought more about what they said and they didn't say they would be getting back then. they said they only that they HOPED to be making admissions decisions by then. in terms of interviews with rutgers, this seems to be the first year that they've conducted admissions interviews for the anthro department and i really don't even know if the interviewees are definitely the only candidates still being considered for admissions. i mean, i would assume so but who knows!? as for duke, i didn't apply but followed a conversation in another thread in this forum. it seems that the program has contacted all the students accepted in the first round... and other applicants who haven't been contacted with acceptance have resigned to probably being rejected.
Ibn Anthropology Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Who all got wait listed at Rutgers? I got a wait-list email today. And does anyone know how many acceptances there have been?
samjones Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 although i was interviewed by rutgers, i have not gotten an acceptance or waitlist email. i'm wondering about numbers, too. i bet penny burness would be forthcoming with a waitlist caller! (hint, hint) it would make sense for them to want to know at this stage where they on the waitlist... how many students are being offered acceptances.

Lilith Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 well, I got a rejection when I checked the website~~~good luck fellows.
samjones Posted March 10, 2010 Author Posted March 10, 2010 well, I got a rejection when I checked the website~~~good luck fellows. i'm sorry to hear that! i hope you've heard good news from other programs. on the rutgers decision- were you prompted to go to the website to check your status? and is the website that you checked the https://admissionservices.rutgers.edu/graduate/programStatus? i've been checking that often and it never changes! thanks ahead of time and good luck if you're still waiting on other notifications!
