I know that a bunch of people applied to IU, so i figured I start a topic.

I'll start by saying that at least one person got an interview (so did I, but I never post it in the results page). My phone interview took place Monday morning and I think it went pretty well. Now I just have to wait.

Same here spoke to DGS on Monday morning. Went well. Now am waiting.

I did not apply to Indiana, but just wanted to wish both of you luck while you're waiting for the final decision. And in any case, congratulations on having received the interviews.

Good luck to you! it would be weird if we were competing for the same spot.

I also got the interview e-mail. am kinda nervous about it.

Can anyone share what you talked about broadly? Is it like the normal interview which they ask you why you're interested in the program, what is your strength and weakness, stuff like that? Do they ask you a lot of serious academic questions?

I know it's kinda weird to ask potential competitor for help, but I'll be really appreciated of anyone could share that.

thanks!!

Hey, I don't know if it will be the same for you... but, I basically talked to the DGS about my academic and personal history and how I became interested in the Sociology of Religion. We also talked about how I would benefit from Indiana, and how Indiana compared to some of the other schools I had applied to. I asked a couple of questions, she answer them (I regret not asking more questions, but whatever), and we talked about how two of my college professors were IU grads.

The DGS is one of the nicest people I have talked to (and I talk to many many sociologists every day)... So, my advice is simple:

1) know who you'd like to work with and know they're stuff

2) Have questions (perhaps you can find out when they'll be making decisions, the size of the cohort, etc... all the things I forgot to ask)

3) relax and be yourself

This is of course coming from someone who hasn't gotten in... but I felt really good after the interview and I have my fingers crossed. I hope I get in.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

:(

No interview here. But I had a really positive email discussion with a faculty member a few days before the deadline, so maybe he already thinks I am awesome and didn't need to talk to me anymore??

got my big reject letter from them today.

I am actually okay with this, because I wasn't in love with their program and now I don't have to feel bad about choosing a lower ranked program that I like better.

Don't feel bad. They had to cut 4-6 spots from the incoming cohort this year--budget cuts.

Congrats to those who got accepted! Does Indiana have an admit weekend coming up?

By the way, I heard today that I got waitlisted. :)

I haven't received the official letter, but they told me that the best time to visit is March 5th.

oh, and they don't have any financial support for people who want to go up and visit. it sucks, but i understand. I'm still pretty excited to go up there.

Enjoy your visit. :D Do let us know how things go. Will you have a chance to check out Bloomington? It's supposedly a college town so there should be plenty of things to distract you from school work. ;)

I visited Indiana last week. I was very impressed with their program. Bloomington seems like a great place to live, and although it is rather small for my taste, there's plenty of stuff to do.

the students did an awesome job in terms of scheduling meetings with faculty, a campus tour, and a couple other things. I also felt very welcome by the grad students. I would be quite happy with any of them as my friends/colleagues.

also, Bloomington seems to be quite inexpensive in terms of rent. Most peolpe I asked pay around $500 for a one bedroom (some people pay less).

So, I still have to visit Northwestern and do the interview at Duke. I wanted to post this for anyone who wanted to know more about the program or wasn't able to visit.

Hi, maximus82. Welcome back! Sounds like you had a nice visit. Are the faculty members pretty accessible to students?

Any idea how the cohort is shaping up? Any chance that they will go to the waitlist? I e-mailed the department weeks ago regarding my status and have yet to receive a reply.

The faculty members are not only accessible to students, but everyone I talked to seemed to be working on something with someone. The four professors I met had more than one student helping them with something. Also, i don't know if anyone noticed this, but most faculty members at Indiana have been there for a big part of their career. I think that's a great sing.

I really don't know what the chances are for people who got waitlisted. Not everyone who got accepted visited that same day, and I don't even know how many people they accepted. I remember someone saying that their ideal cohort would be 10 people, which is a little smaller than past years.

Since I've been in the waitlist before, I promised myself I would inform every single school of my decision as soon as I make one. I hate the wait last year, so I know what you are going through.

Sounds good! Feel free to take all the time that you need to decide.

Since we last spoke, I've been accepted by another school with full funding. So I already have two schools to choose from (if you don't count MAPSS).

The thing that I'm worried about is getting an acceptance from Indiana on 4/15 and needing to decide without a campus visit. That's why I am toying with the idea of visiting campus in early April.

What other schools accepted you if you don't mind me asking? I knew about MAPSS but I think that's it.

Is Indiana at the top of your list? Also, are you visiting your other schools? The problem with visiting Indiana is that I had to pay for my visit. But it was totally worth it. They have an incredible reputation. So, if you want to visit you should, even if you don't have an acceptance. Just email the DGS and tell her about your concerns.

Also, I just found out that they were recently ranked in the top 4 generalist programs in the country by an external review group (that included top sociologists from other schools).

Oh, which external review group?

I will PM you about the other stuff.
