  1. For real. While sociology might be a safe spot to come out, sometimes it doesn't seem like a safe spot to joke around sometimes. The extreme liberal ideology makes it hard to make joke (although at times they will be tasteless), because all of the ''bleeding hearts" take everything you say so seriously. I didn't view the original comment as overly offensive, in fact--i thought it was a joke. Judging by the last reply, I guess it wasn't. However, I really feel like in sociology you're allowed to speak your mind, so long as your mind aligns with a liberal ideology. Makes it hard for people who like "shock value" comedy. To the OP--i can almost promise you that it will not be a problem to come out to your new department, and good luck.
  2. if you say yes now and change your mind later you'd be screwing other potential students over.
  3. I'm wait listed at Emory. I did get in to a couple other places, unfortunately I've already decided that I would rather not go to them so I've declined (either due to poor fit or lack of funding). If I don't get in Emory I'd better be content in waiting and reapplying.
  4. I would wager that coming in with that type of mind set wouldn't be a promising start.
  5. I don't know why, but stuff like this makes me giggle.
  6. Well I obviously knew because it happened to me as well. At least I got an interview at Baylor before that. I know how all of you feel. Sorry to have reminded you to check, being the bearer of bad news so to speak.
  7. if you haven't gotten word from Texas, try checking the UT direct status page. Probably won't be good news if you do it this way, but a potential for news nonetheless.
  8. This whole thing made me giggle like a Japanese school girl.
  9. I hope the same is true for me (on the sociology front).
  10. I replied to the other topic, but I was wondering what the sociology people think. Do you guys feel adcoms might judge you unfairly based on your appearance? I certainly would hope not considering our discipline, but human nature makes me think they might.
  11. If you google my name (fairly unique) you get conference papers, and undergrad honors discussion postings from years ago. You also get my facebook. The information on my facebook doesn't worry me but my pictures do. Nothing inappropriate, I just have an 'alternative' look. I have 8 year old dreadlocks and a bunch of tattoos. I'm worried this might turn adcoms off.
  12. Was that one person or three? Either way congrats to you, enjoy the weekend for me...lookin like a depressing one on this end. ha!
  13. Congrats to everyone that has heard good news!
  14. I've been working a lot with secularization and spirituality lately. I think we all have plans to publish, so I understand being hesitant. Though I would hope no one would steal research ideas (especially on an interwebz forum), sounds kind of stupid on a number of levels.
  15. I notice many of you, like me, are interested in studying religion. I was just curious as to what type of research you have done or would like to do? I suppose this is a good starting point, and hopefully a decent distraction from the wait.
  16. I'm also interested in the sociology of religion. Sounds like you're taking a similar path that I took. I did get into an MA program with about an 1100. Went through in 3 semesters, but over that time I tried to do all those things you talked about. I did the conferences, worked on anything I could get my hands on, even submitted a paper for publication recently. Unfortunately, I still felt a bit insecure about my GRE considering my less than stellar undergraduate career. So on a whim I took it again in August before starting applications. I actually did much better. I would say keep trying to bolster your CV but it you have a whole year still, you might as well try to improve that score just so you don't worry about it. We should start a religion discussion on the sociology subforum.
  17. If people need me to explain what sociology is I usually just tell them I don't know.
  18. That cracked me up...I needed that. Not laughing at whatever issues you have though.
  19. All I got were confirmations that my materials were received. Don't have any tips though, let me know if you get some (so I won't be lurking this forum all day). I submitted a paper with a colleague to the Easterns, don't know if I will attend but my work will be there. Not sure why she wanted to do that one since we're located in the South, I think she wants to show off for ivy league professors.
  20. Culture and religion, for the most part. Quantitative methods are always fun too.
  21. I'm doing sociology, but i'd love to rewind and do some marine bio.
  22. man, you're all such bad asses. no sarcasm.
