  1. To both of you- what are your interests? You both applied to more than two of the same schools as I did. Although I'm sure I could search around to find out, for now it's easier to ask here.
  2. damn right..i'll be the white guy with dreads to my waist. see you both there.
  3. I don't know if it counts, but; over the last 6 months I have transitioned to living on my own without being in school for the first time since 03 (this includes paying all my bills--which I was only somewhat used to), working at a couple different community colleges and being responsible for young minds, a few friends passed away well before their time, and i've lost 160lbs. Not the most stressful stuff, and kind of spread out but I feel some of the pain described here.
  4. HAHA! Man, hopefully we both get that big YES!
  5. I'll probably continue to teach at local colleges and apply next year.
  6. my BA and MA are both in Sociology. Though I wish I had a more varied history, sociology appreciates different perspectives.
  7. yeah, I feel all of that. only I got a bit desperate and depressed when you said you heard from emory, because I applied there too. half joking.
  8. 3.7 GPA in graduate work. (not that great) Decent GRE score for a sociology applicant (I think) Multiple conference presentations. (already accepted to do more in a few months) Great LoR's (some coming from people who know faculty at a few of my top choices) Teaching experience, both as a GTA and an Adjunct Instructor. I have a submission to a journal, but it probably wont get accepted the first time around. Finished my MA pretty damn fast. Nothing exemplary.
  9. First 60 hours of undergrad left me with a 2.4 gpa. (I did bring it up to a 2.9 though once I got into my major courses) Writing score wasn't that great. No official publications, only a submission. SoP is generic, used basically the same one for every school and I regret it. Same school for undergrad and grad degrees, unranked school i believe. General apathy toward school before my graduate career. Submitted very close to deadlines.
  10. Texas is actually my number one choice, though I had some of the issues you had with the early submission. After Texas it was all downhill, unfortunately I want to be in Austin more than anywhere else (interests and location wise).
  11. A large public university in Florida.
  12. Seems statistically improbable that there would be so many good GRE (80th percentile and above) scores on here. That said, it makes me proud of my fellow soc. applicants (even though it's already been pointed out that other elements of the application may be weighed more heavily). My stats: GRE: 750 (q) 560 (v) 4.5(aw) GPA: 3.0 (Undergrad) 3.7 (Grad)..Both degrees in Sociology. LoR:Three great ones from professors I know quite well, one being the department chair at my former school. SoP: Decent, but I think I messed up by using virtually the same version on every application. Writing Sample: Masters thesis, my opinion of it is biased. Experience: 1.5 Years as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (6 courses), Adjunct Instructor at local colleges (3 courses so far) Presentations: Two national conference presentations (ASR), two regional presentations (SSS), Abstracts submitted to the ASA, Easterns and Southerns for this year. Publications: Submitted a paper to JSSR recently. Interests: Religion, Culture, Quantitative Methodology, Theory Schools: Texas, Emory, Indiana, Duke, North Carolina, Baylor, Notre Dame, Purdue, LSU, NCST (obviously I would prefer some of these over others) Good luck to everyone, unless it comes down to me and you for a final spot...in which case, you're going down!
  13. Done with everything but the back ups. Trying to stay zen-like in this waiting process.
  14. I heard back from almost all of mine. Indiana actually sent me something a few weeks ago telling me that they had not received a transcript but their deadline isn't until the 15th.
