herself the elf Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Called the department today for some info, this year they have approximately 415 applicants, intended cohort size 8, usually accept about 20. Usually start making admissions the 3rd week of February. Not that any of this is unexpected, but I just thought I would share. (To self: Accept 5%???? I mean, I knew this, but really???? Perhaps I can scare off the first round of admits by posting things on GradCafe about how NYC is a scary, polluted, expensive place to live. . . j/k)

Maya Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 NYU being my top choice, (and it being my second time applying for NYU), I have to say I almost stopped breathing when I saw this post title. But I guess I can go back to breathing for a few more weeks. I talked to a professor I want to work with back in October about my re-application, and apparently this year has a new adcom, but I guess that's not news, since they probably change every couple of years or so. good luck everyone!
St. Jude Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 NYU is one of my top choices too (also second time applying)! Thanks for the info! I hope we all get in. One more week or so of waiting...
rogue Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 They're near the top of my list, too. Those stats are a little disheartening, but I guess we'll see what happens in a couple of weeks. Good luck to everyone!
rogue Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I talked to someone on the NYU ad comm this week, and this person said they're meeting next week. Now there's an acceptance posted on the results page. Based on my conversation with the committee member, I'm inclined to think it's bogus. Anyone want to claim it and share info?
Maya Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I'm not claiming the acceptance, I just want to second Rogue's question, because right now I am a ball of nerves, after seeing that on the results board. It could be credible though, this is around the same time as last year right??
myrrh Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I used to think Stanford's 8/240 was crazy enough......well, as it turns out, Stanford is not too crazy. Anyway, good luck you guys!

Anyway, good luck you guys! sorry to freak everyone out, but I posted the NYU acceptance. I got a phone call this morning. so it is real. the DGS said they had over 400 applicants for a cohort of 10. I haven't gotten any kind of email yet so I'm sure they are still contacting people. good luck to all of you!!
focused Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I used to think Stanford's 8/240 was crazy enough......well, as it turns out, Stanford is not too crazy. Anyway, good luck you guys! I think Stanford and Harvard actually accept the same or a slightly lower percentage than does NYU. The expected cohorts at each of Stanford, Harvard, and NYU are about the same, but NYU accepts about twice as many (because more people decline the offer than at S and H). Harvard, for example, had 268 applicants and extended 11 offers for an expected cohort of 8. 20/415 at NYU is pretty cutthroat - no doubt about it. I'm just pointing out that percentage-wise, they aren't any different than other top programs.

And focused, good point, you are right!

If you have any questions about the best asthma doctors, how to buy/use a handgun, or finding an apartment below $2,500/month, I'd be happy to help! (Joke! (see first post, above) In reality, big congratulations. It's awesome here-- I wouldn't leave if you paid me. ) Edited February 18, 2010 by herself the elf jacib and Maya 2
St. Jude Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Congrats!! I hope we will be joining you in celebration soon. Maya 1
Maya Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I just saw that on the results page, someone noted having received a waitlist email from NYU. Judging by the last few years, I guess that means they have already made all of their admits. Wow, this has been a tough 24 hours for me...both the schools I had so much hope for are now pretty much 100% no I guess I will have to make the best of this weekend, and distract myself.
St. Jude Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Don't give up! It is way too early to give up! These schools do waves of admissions. So maybe we didn't make the first round but we don't know if there is going to be a second or third wave. Keep your head up! It's not over yet.
rogue Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Sigh. I'm feeling prematurely bummed about this one, too.
herself the elf Posted March 15, 2010 Author Posted March 15, 2010 It seems we weren't the only ones wondering! PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT THE SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT REGARDING ADMISSIONS DECISIONS. THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS & SCIENCE WILL HAVE ALL NOTIFICATIONS OUT NO LATER THAN MARCH 15TH. PLEASE READ THE PROSPECTIVE GRADUATE FAQ BEFORE CONTACTING THE DIRECTOR OF GRADUATE STUDIES. Today, apparently? The Graduate FAQ says the "graduate admissions department expects to mail out decisions. . ."-- ugh! Does anyone have evidence to the contrary, that it will be email? Sorry if this freaks anybody out, I'm hoping that soon we will all feel some relief!

Sorry if this freaks anybody out, I'm hoping that soon we will all feel some relief! I'm pretty frustrated as well, herself. As a 2nd time applicant (and rejectee), I can pretty much guarantee that the notifications will come out by email. Not that I'm anxiously waiting for a duplicate email from last year, but it would certainly be nice for them to give us all some closure. Then again I guess I could just refer to my email from last March, since I'm sure it will be worded the same this year.

Thank you for commiserating, Maya, as well as for the insider scoop from your experience last year. I, too, expect mine to be a rejection, but I'm actually glad to hear that it will be an email. 1. I can call them tomorrow if I don't hear anything, and 2. I get way more anxious opening thin, hastily-prepared envelopes. And of course, 3. Receipt, delete! I'm ready to put a nail in this coffin! PS- I'm not sure if the link in my prior post was obvious, http://sociology.fas.nyu.edu/page/graduate
St. Jude Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Well it's happened. I got my reject email. I am a little annoyed and confused. I had talked with so many professors there including one who really would have been the perfect person to work with. I am also annoyed that I have applied twice just get two no's. Well whatever to them. You would think they could have done this a little earlier!!!!!!
ndd0212 Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 I too was rejected. Still waiting for some others....oh well, I suppose NYU just wasn't for me
