  1. LSE here I come :)

  2. I'm pretty frustrated as well, herself. As a 2nd time applicant (and rejectee), I can pretty much guarantee that the notifications will come out by email. Not that I'm anxiously waiting for a duplicate email from last year, but it would certainly be nice for them to give us all some closure. Then again I guess I could just refer to my email from last March, since I'm sure it will be worded the same this year.
  3. Yaaaa Team Canada!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. That book is cited more than a few times in my research proposal
  5. Your research sounds very interesting tomi! I too am interested in labour (excuse the spelling, I'm Canadian) issues, although my main focus has been on the American labour movement and its place within the American 'left'. I have a very clear idea about the issue I want to explore for a dissertation ( I wrote a research proposal for my LSE application), but there are other areas of labour, economic and political sociology that I'm very interested in as well. edit: tomi, in response to your question about American students not being so interested in blue-collar workers, that may be accurate, althought I am not certain and obviously am no expert. Judging from the positive enthusiasm I received from the professors who I contacted back in October though, it certainly felt as if I was not in the majority in terms of research focus. Mind you, the positive responses clearly did not get me far with respect to admissions in the U.S. schools (thank goodness for LSE), but nonetheless, there certainly was excitement about my topic.
  6. I just saw that on the results page, someone noted having received a waitlist email from NYU. Judging by the last few years, I guess that means they have already made all of their admits. Wow, this has been a tough 24 hours for me...both the schools I had so much hope for are now pretty much 100% no I guess I will have to make the best of this weekend, and distract myself.
  7. Congratulations to focused and astronautka, as well as the others accepted to Michigan (there seem to be quite a few on the results board). Since it was a mass email and I'm not international (Canadian usually doesn't count in terms of admissions notifications), it's clear that I didn't get in, and it is disappointing because I had been in contact with a professor there and he had been pretty supportive of my application. But I'm happy for those of you who had more success, I have heard wonderful things about Michigan sociology. Have a great weekend celebrating!
  8. Congratulations to all those admitted to Michigan! Just wondering if any of you can tell us whether this was a mass email? Thanks!
  9. congratulations soci4287! As for the rest of us, I'm crossing my fingers!
  10. I'm not claiming the acceptance, I just want to second Rogue's question, because right now I am a ball of nerves, after seeing that on the results board. It could be credible though, this is around the same time as last year right??
  11. I just snorted and got coffee all over my keyboard. (sorry to laugh at your expense!)
  12. I have no suggestions but I'm definitely in the same boat. I still haven't heard from ANY of my schools, and last year at this time all the schools had begun notifying. I applied last year, and all that got me through my horrible job was thinking "this time next year I will be studying what I love and not at this stupid job." Well, here I am a year later and still doing the same stupid job. All I want to do is go back to researching and writing, and doing what I love instead of helping some big corporation steal more money from people. eeps ok I don't want to give off any more negative energy so I should end this rant before it turns into an essay
  13. Can you clarify whether it's 8-12 people they are admitting, or if it's that they want an entering cohort of 8-12?
  14. hmm but according to last year's results, people who were admitted (at least some of them) heard about their admission via email or phone first, before the website had even updated. I think for rejections though, yes, we will find out only via the website. ( I say 'we' but of course I'm hoping that doesn't include us!)
  15. And what's worse is that isn't it a holiday on Monday for you guys in the U.S.? (I'm Canadian).....so that means we get a day of silence today followed by 3 more days of certain silence, right?
  16. whew, I have to say I am relieved that the tone of this thread has lightened up a bit. For awhile there I was getting worried that this was going to turn into the polisci boards, with all their +1/-1 drama (have any of you seen their decisions thread, it has gotten pretty heated at times!)
  17. Oh I should probably warn you though, it's a pretty long thread! But at least it helps kill some time, right? Another thing I just noticed, although maybe I'm the only person who didn't notice this already, but Northwestern actually posted who is on the admissions committee. (http://www.sociology.northwestern.edu/contact/index.html) I found that so surprising, usually it seems to be kept a total secret by most schools! Boy, I'm definitely with you on the not-being-able-to-wait-until-this-month-is-over-sentiment.
  18. I was just looking at last year's Northwestern sociology thread, and noticed that people were getting email notifications about acceptances on the second Thursday and Friday of February. Interestingly enough, I also noticed that further on in the month people who had not yet heard, were contacting the department and were still receiving the response that the committee was presently reviewing files and would be notifying by the end of the month. So, perhaps, contrary to my earlier post, some people may hear something by the end of the week. It could just be that anyone who contacts the dept. asking about when people will be notified, will get the standard 'party line' (or I guess you could call it 'department line') that decisions will come out at the end of the month. I guess we'll find out soon enough! edit: here's the link to the thread I was talking about (if any of you want to join me in being neurotic)
  19. oh no I'm so sorry to heart that, but I'll be rooting for you for the rest of the schools!
  20. My boyfriend called the grad secretary for me. I haven't had a chance when at work, so he's doing the dirty work for me lol
  21. ok for all those anxiously waiting for Northwestern to start contacting, the word from the dept today was that they are currently reviewing files and won't be giving out decisions until the end of the month. Maybe they are just saying that so we won't all be expecting to hear this friday (which, based on past years results, I certainly was), but just thought I would relay that to you all. I was really hoping I could hear SOMETHING this Friday. I was expecting to either be celebrating or feeling sorry for myself this weekend, considering last year they sent out a bunch of acceptances and rejections on the same day (second Friday of Feb.). Boy, it looks like my schools are all going to be notifying late this year. Booo, this is hard to wait, esp. because it's my second time around. It's like I have been waiting for a year and a half!
  22. I'm not going to be of any help here, but I have to say I have been wondering the same thing with respect to the contacts I made back in the fall as well! I have held back from reaching out only because I have the impression (from obsessively checking the past few years of the results board) that I'm going to hear back within the next couple of weeks anyway, so I don't want to be a bother/annoyance just because I can't handle a couple more weeks of silence. Then again, part of me just wants to contact them again to remind them I'm still here and still want to go to those schools. I keep worrying they have forgotten about me.
  23. A big congrats to everyone who has received acceptances in the past week!! I haven't heard anything from my schools yet but hearing the good news for other people actually helps as a distraction from the silence. Here's to another good week for everybody next week.
  24. NYU being my top choice, (and it being my second time applying for NYU), I have to say I almost stopped breathing when I saw this post title. But I guess I can go back to breathing for a few more weeks. I talked to a professor I want to work with back in October about my re-application, and apparently this year has a new adcom, but I guess that's not news, since they probably change every couple of years or so. good luck everyone!
