hopefulJ2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I applied to the PhD program at Brandeis and last night I received an email that I had been offered admission to the joint MA program in English and WGS with a tuition remission scholarship. I won't be taking the offer so hopefully that will open up a spot for one of you MA hopefuls out there. At any rate, I thought I'd share because it seems that Brandeis is probably quite close to making their final decisions (if they haven't already). Of course the email mentioned that "We had a record number of excellent applicants for a very small number of slots and were able to admit only 3% of our candidates." Mmmmmmmkay. did the email specify whether the applicants were to the phd or to the MA? gee i'd LOVE a tuition remission to the MA-- im not even asking for a stipend!

The numbers were referring to PhD applicants. Did you apply to the joint program or just English? I spoke to a student who is in the joint program right now and she too has a tuition remission but hers was through the WGS department. At any rate, it seems like it's not totally uncommon to get tuition remission for the MA programs there. I will be gracefully turning down their offer asap so that they can move on to someone else. Good luck! Edited February 27, 2010 by callmelilyb

rainy_day Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Did you get a full tuition scholarship? I just got accepted to their joint MA program as well, w/ a 50% scholarship. I am not sure if I will go or not. I think this will be my only acceptance.

I am not sure if I will go or not. I think this will be my only acceptance. Mine was 50% too, with the possibility that I may "qualify for additional financial aid." As far as I know Brandeis is a great, intimate program and if you ultimately want to pursue a PhD I think they have a good record of sending people off. When I was originally thinking of pursuing an MA first they were definitely at the top of my list. I have a bunch of information saved in my email from a student who's currently in the joint program -- if you're interested, PM your email address and I'll pass it along to you.
Gara Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Does anyone know whether Notre Dame is admitting any more English PhD students? There are three acceptances listed on the results board, and those people were notified in early to mid-February. I assume that, at this point, I'm just waiting around for a rejection, but hope springs eternal. If anyone has any info on what kind of numbers they're taking this year or whether I should abandon my candlelight vigil, could you post it? I've been having a series of bizarre dreams about being accepted to the program, only the school is a floating island in the middle of the ocean, or it's constructed of oddly tall buildings... I'm losing it. I would consider tattooing the Pope's face across my back if that would make Notre Dame's adcomm understand my desperation to be admitted to their program. Think I should mention that? Thanks! And congrats to the three who posted admission, I wish you the best.

They do have a waitlist, which I think has already been notified of their status (?), but there may be a hope that they will expand the waitlist dependent upon the number of candidates who decline.
gken4 Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 If you've been waitlisted at brandeis, what have you heard/details??? there is a waitlist in the results feed
