eiren8 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I've seen some Penn acceptances on the results search but all seems quiet on the boards. I've been accepted for EALC with a focus on Chinese art history. Any other Chinese art history/history/literature people around?
diehtc0ke Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 (edited) UPenn is at the top of my list right now but I have one more school that I'm waiting to officially be rejected from and a few other offers I have to make sure that I want to turn down. I'd be going for my PhD in English. It's weird because I live in NYC and actually have a grandfather that lives in Philly but I haven't been there since I was about 6. datamineguy Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Hello, I was wondering if there are nice luxury apartment good for buying or renting near wharton. It would be good if it is 1BR or studio It really doesn't matter but i am looking for a home to stay for 4 years so, i want it to be good. coming from a city where index of living is probably the highest, I don't really mind the high cost since i am sort of paying high cost for bad room anyway now. I dont drive so i dont need a parking lot but this limits to places very close to the campus Any comments would be helpful! Thank you!
SmokinTexan Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Also still waiting to hear back from a few other schools, but seriously considering Penn. I wish that all the schools were consistent in the manner they send out acceptance/rejection letters because I hate seeing that other people are receiving some of their responses via postal mail while others are recieving them via email. So far, I've only received emails, but I'm afraid that some of the responses are slow in getting to me because they were sent via snail mail. So for those of you that are 100% certain you're attending Penn, what was the deciding factor?
mattchurgin Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Hey I am going to Penn for Bioengineering. Anyone else? Where's a good place to live? Price is a consideration, distance from campus less so. I just want a nice place to settle down for a while.
AKJen Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Just committed to Penn this morning. I spent a semester there as an undergrad, so I'm sort of familiar with the area, but I was living on campus, so I'm in the same boat as far as finding a place to live. Really looking forward to it though.
magic Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 A student in my program told me a "nice" 1 bedroom goes for $700. Is that accurate? It's much lower than what Penn Off-Campus Services quotes (+$1000 if I remember).
diehtc0ke Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I think that's more possible if you're looking in West Philly than if you're looking at Center City from what I gather.
hamster Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 I'm going to Temple so we will be neighbors Looking forward to Philly. It will be a big move for me, from San Fran. Q to those in the know: Is it ok to call it Philly? People from SF hate the nickname "Frisco" so I was wondering if it is like that.
GrayRainbow Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I'll be at GSE in the Fall. Moving from Los Angeles after only living here and in the Bay Area, so it'll definitely be an adjustment, but I'm really excited! I saw on the Results page that one other person posted an acceptance to my same program (CAPS). Whoever that was, are you here??
rogue Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 Q to those in the know: Is it ok to call it Philly? People from SF hate the nickname "Frisco" so I was wondering if it is like that. Totally fine to call it Philly. In fact, in my almost 10 years here, I don't think I've heard any locals refer to the city by its full name.
ristastic Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Hey everyone! I accepted Penn's offer earlier this week. I'll be going for my PhD in Art History with a medieval subfield.

diehtc0ke Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Officially accepted Penn's offer yesterday and I'll be entering the English department. Already have a possible roommate and probably going to try and secure a place in the art museum district.
PiledHigher&D-EE-per Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Hi guys! I'm starting a PhD in Electrical Engineering this year, and I just wanted to ask how difficult it would be to live off campus without a car? I'm not really sure about the double-bed grad "dorm", as I would prefer to find my feet beforehand, maybe in a reasonably priced studio flat. Any suggestions really appreciated! Cheers
rogue Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Hi guys! Cheers Philly is really easy to get around without a car; in fact, I'm thinking of selling mine (insurance here is insanely high, and I only drive it a couple of times a month). I suggest trying to live near one of the subway lines, which will get you to campus quickly and easily. You could also live within a short walk but still be off campus in West Philly/University City.
AKJen Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 I've been looking into Phillycarshare and it seems like a decent deal. It's $125 a year (but you can do monthly or even hourly) and includes insurance and gas. You reserve a car online and pick it up at a few dozen places around town, some right on campus. With a subscription, you pay $.25 a mile when you take the car out. So not great for long trips, but if you only need it a couple of times a month to run to a grocery store or ikea, it's a much better deal than keeping a car maintained, gas, insurance and parking costs. I'm moving from Alaska and my car is one of the last things I'm going to give up. I'm pretty okay with it, since I spent a semester there and didn't miss the car at all.
Guest patentboy23 Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Doing M.S. Ed program in Counseling and Mental Health Services. I'ver herd the grad students kinda isolate themselves from the undergrad social life at Upenn. Imma have to change that up and get it in with the undergrads.
yayherecomesliz Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Belatedly accepted to the M.S.Ed Educational Policy program. big move from LA to Philly! A bit worried about housing and the area in general as I've never been to the east coast. Any recommendations on how I should approach housing and how Philadelphia is in general?
Guest patentboy23 Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 I'd suggest goin to the housing website because they provide some good info about getting off campus housing which is generally cheaper than on campus. I'm living on campus in a single apt cuz I want to be near everyone else and the parties in spite of the cost.
