jespen21 Posted September 23, 2017 Posted September 23, 2017 So I am going into my second year in a microbio PhD program, I never took biochem as an undergrad or in my masters program, my research project won't be biochem heavy. Turns out biochem is a prereq for the program, my advisor and I agree that I shouldn't take a biochemistry class (the undergrad class would take up too much time, and a grad level class would be out of my depth). A few potential solutions I've come up with are to do an independent reading and take an assessment at the end, enroll in an online class through coursera or edx and pay for the certificate, or have a biochemist on my candidacy exam committee. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I recommend that you make sure that your advisor's guidance is going the hold water when your department and school make required degree checks before you cross certain thresholds in your program.
