nervouswreck Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 mid-end feb, huh... This really kills. Hey, Saber! Are u applying for a PhD? Coz' I asked a few of these univs whether they had a PhD program in osteo/forensics and they said 'no'. Full stop. Unless I misinterpreted that. o _ o Anyway, we have a few in common. Am applying to very few - Ohio State, MSU, SUNY Binghamton, UPenn, Univ of Toronto and Univ. of Florida. The Tennessee unit looked VERY interesting tho'... Well, (picks up a huge mug of chilled beer/coffee), here's to our miserable wait! (GLUG. Thud. Smack.) What's high in your list, if u don't mind me asking?
thundersaber1985 Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Hey nervous They told me the same thing, I want to do bioarchaeology and forensics so they said that their PHD program would give the experience i need to make it in the field. For some reason lots of PHD programs have a bias against forensic anthropology but I think it is an emerging field that osteologist should look into. My top choice is anyone who gives me money, I like all the programs mostly because of the professors and their interests. I was going to apply to Florida but all my undergrad advisors told me not to, they said that people are really cutthroat there and it is not the friendliest work enivornment. Hopefully we will hear something soon and may end up fellow classmates.
nailbitingnmiserable Posted January 23, 2008 Author Posted January 23, 2008 I had a dream the other night that I got accepted to NYU. I was so happy I started to cry. I woke up completely disappointed that it had only been a dream, and convinced that if I checked my email it would still be there. Sadly, no email. : ( Is it bad that even my dreams are revolving around grad school?
heythereman Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 Quick question: are there any anthro programs out there that are known to do phone interviews? I haven't heard about interviews being a part of any programs I applied to, but it's a bit nervewracking to see other phone interview offers popping up elsewhere.
rising_star Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 I've never heard of any though I suppose it *could* happen.
nervouswreck Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 This entire application process is an ordeal. and now a phone interview??? Haven't we shed enough blood already?? Hey saber! really? Florida is THAT bad? 'coz the program is excellent and I really want to get thru there. and yeah, i got the same feedback from many. "why forensics?" "don't limit yourself"...yadayadayada...

Nervouswreck, I've looked around and I don't think phone interviews are common (although not, as the last poster said, impossible). In fact, I asked whether interviews are required at several programs I applied to, and they said no. Don't listen to people who slag off the field you're interested in! There will always be those people, and they don't matter to your choices anyway.
nervouswreck Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Thanks, heythereman! Feeling slightly better However, the more I see the results board each passing day, the more hopeless I feel. Yeah, I know they haven't yet started taking in applicants of the anthro dept. But still....
keepcalm Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Hi everyone! I'm really happy to have found this thread since I'm anxiously waiting to here back from schools. I'm interested in bioarchaeology an applied to: Arizona State Florida Wisconsin- Madison WUSTL UNC-Chapel Hill U Calgary U Alberta The wait is really starting to bother me since my science friends are starting to here back. Good luck!
nailbitingnmiserable Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 I am so happy January is almost over. I thought it would never end. My life is in limbo waiting for these results, and I just want March to hurry up and get here. I'm afraid to make any decisions in one way or another, and for better or worse I just want the wait to be over
pleasegodletmein Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 yes yes, me too, i'm going freaking nuts all of a sudden. i can't concentrate on anything. this blows. there should be a law.
keepcalm Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Exactly! Sometimes I'm super calm about it, but lately I've been really anxious about hearing back from schools. It's horrible. :-(
nervouswreck Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Why can't they just tell us now? like, NOW. Just end this suffering!
pleasegodletmein Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 seriously. for now, the slack life i imagine professors having is not working to my advantage- as they sip on their mid-day glass of wine and peruse the latest additions at the local bookstore, i am losing my ability to think in a cogent manner about anything. i'm so freaking ancy. AAAAAAAAAAAA for god's sake people, have a little mercy on us! of course, if they need more time to rule everyone else out but are going to let me in, i will forgive them...
nailbitingnmiserable Posted January 29, 2008 Author Posted January 29, 2008 My friends and loved ones keep telling me that if the school's don't accept me, it is their loss...funny, seems like I'll still be the one not getting her PhD, and out several hundred dollars in application fees. :x
keepcalm Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Yeah, I know it won't be the end of the world (and I've even made a sort of back up plan) but I'd really like to hear back. Plus I'm having a really difficult time gauging how worried I should be about getting in. I want to do very specific research but I have no idea how many other people are interested in the same sorts of things. Plus my GPA is lower than most because I have a science major. I just wish schools would let me know already. Especially the ones whose applications were due Dec. 1st. I think they've had plenty of time to make a decision!
notyourmama Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I got my first rejection a few days ago, and suddenly I feel like I need a backup plan. Like, what the hell am I going to do, so I can afford to pay back my loans? I'm not sure if obsessively reading this board and livejournal help or make it worse. However, here's where I'm waiting on: UF Gainesville UT Austin UNC Chapel Hill Tulane Already heard from Emory. I didn't make the finalists.

And my back-up plan mostly consists of getting a job somewhere on my campus and finishing another degree so it's not really anything exciting. I applied to Florida and UNC too! :-)
lily Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Hey everyone! I just joined hoping this will make the wait go more quickly... I've applied to sociocultural anthropology Ph.D. programs at: Berkeley Michigan Chicago Harvard NYU Columbia University of Washington Santa Cruz I finished a joint BA and MA in cultural and social anthropology last year, and am taking a year off right now to work and save up some money. I cannot wait to get back to school!! What are all of your first choices?
notyourmama Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 My first choice shifts and changes all the time, depending on the criteria. Emory: best money (but again, I didn't get in) Florida: person I most want to work with Tulane or Chapel Hill: places I most want to live Austin: the only place I didn't visit, so it's a big mystery to me
notyourmama Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 I'm in at UNC...just got the email. With funding! Hooray!
keepcalm Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 That's awesome! I haven't heard from them :-(bBut I'm not cultural so maybe that's okay? It's not at the top of the list but I think it would be alright to go there, especially since my family lives in NC. My top choices are Arizona State and WUSTLÂ but the other schools would also be amazing so I'm not too worried about not liking where I get in.
nervouswreck Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 OMG! Offers are coming in for anthro then?? Congrats, perhapsmypapa!! I got a friend in UNC right now and he absolutely loves it there. ...and I haven't heard from any... that's not a good sign too.

Now that's dedication!
notyourmama Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Well, I'm a "non-traditional" or "returning" student (insert your own euphemism for older here), and I'm super invested in ending up in a community that feels comfortable for me. So I went and checked places out before I applied.
