  1. If you could take the cost, and make good connections with profs, maybe.
  2. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad Institution: Large State University Major: BS in Economics, Minor in Global Studies (IR) Undergrad GPA: 3.2 (3.9 in minor) Type of Grad: Random classes Major: Grad GPA: 3.6 GRE: 151/148/4 Any Special Courses: Principles of Macro/Micro, Intermediate Macro/Micro, Game Theory, International Economics, Public Finance, Money and Banking, Labor Economics, Quantitative Analysis (Grad) Letters of Recommendation: 3 Profs Research Experience: Econometric paper in UG. Research Job for a year Teaching Experience: none Subfield/Research Interests: 99% Sure IR/CP Other: URM RESULTS: Acceptances: Kentucky, New Mexico, Houston Waitlists: Rejections: Alabama, GMU (waitlist then reject), SUNY Albany Going to: Kentucky LESSONS LEARNED: Fit is what got me in obviously. Along with not majoring in poli sci probably helped (but hurt me from applying to top schools, my GPA would have been much higher). Study hard for GRE. The Math portion is the one where you can make the most improvement. Apply early. I should have followed my gut in JR yr and changed majors, but a Political Science major is not very employable. Fit gets you in. GPA/GRE gets the funding.
  3. Every book I read said to find someone who will co-author with you. Because according to what I was told, "you will be nowhere near ready to publish until maybe year 2 or 3."
  4. I am waiting for my paper work so I can announce where I will play next year
  5. I think this thread is only for profiles for future applicants. If you have a question, you should make your own thread.
  6. I dont know if this is common practice, but schools do "pressure" applicants to accept offers before April 15, to get the waitlist moving.
  7. As someone with experience in metrics, you are learning almost the same thing from a regular statistics book. It does not get into specific methods till about Chapt 10-12, where you need calculus for it. That is in reference to woodbridge BTW
  8. Rejected to a Safety. I am sure I am not the only one who has had experience with that.
  9. Why so much math? Are you doing methods or have you just not had it for awhile?
  10. What do you guys plan on doing this summer before PhD? I am probably going to try to intern somewhere. If not, I will be reading some political theory and relaxing haha.
  11. Should be a good week this week, most schools are coming off spring break. funding decisions and last minute admissions need to be made!
  12. I guess when you see one institution really putting their best foot forward and doing skype calls, talking about research synergies, weekly emails, etc. Its kind of different from conducting "business as usual." For a program on level of OSU (or Gtown if the other prof. wants to join in), do you feel like you need to "woo" students, or do you feel like your website/handbook/reputation tells prospective's enough about it and its their job to choose you? It's the classic case of having a girl chase you compared to you chasing the girl
  13. It comes down to debt and your risk tolerance really. You could do the MA portion and leave in a year or two if funding does not change.
  14. I have a question for the faculty. Is it common practice for POI's to contact students after admittance? The school I want to go to has been quite cold in response to my emails and no one has reached out and contacted me, whereas others have been trying to "woo" me. Does this show a lack of interest in me?
  15. And Runner12 is one of the people to beat this cycle. I was Econ and IR, wish i could have done math or stat as a double
  16. This is sound thinking. Just make sure you do your thesis on a political science topic (or poli econ) so that you can send it as a writing sample.
