    SSHRC 2010

Category A = CGS (36 months of funding at $35,000 per year) Category B = Doctoral Fellowship (1, 2, 3, or 4 years at $20,000 per year) Category C = Your choice of A or B (since you probably put a foreign institution as your school on the application) Hope that helps.

Ha. Graduate work takes you in directions you never could have foreseen. If only SSHRC judged research ability by our conscientious study of this forum, what we know about the adjudication of awards at the institutional and federal level, and our investigation into mail delivery, then we would all have funding.

I spoke to my grad administrator today, and she seems to think that we will find out this week. I suppose the mid May thing was just to forestall harassment by crazed grad students. Probaby a good idea.

I much prefer this scenario. Maybe mid May is the very end of when people will get their letters? However, SSHRC might just be giving out different dates to different people. I tend to believe the information that SSHRC sends to the awards offices over what they tell us. It seems like they would piss off all the wrong people if they lied directly to the offices.

Okay, it looks like I was a bit hasty. I just got this email from grad studies: "We have been notified by SSHRC that the 2010 competition results will be announced by mid May." Sorry. It looks like we have a while yet before SSHRC releases any results.

    SSHRC 2010

My department got this message yesterday from grad studies: SSHRC results - update SSHRC is ‘currently in the process of producing the National Doctoral results for the beginning of next week and the Master’s results should follow shortly after’. It is hoped the scholarship office will know these results by the end of next week. Maybe the optimists were right and we will have results by early next week?

And, the answer is... unsuccessful. Anyone who is still waiting for UofC, just call FGS and ask directly for your results. Apparently, if you act like they should tell you, they will. Good luck. Again, congratulations to everyone who won an award this competition. It helps me feel better about SSHRC (and my unsuccessful application), knowing that some of my fellow stressees are happy and holding a bag full of money. For anyone in my boat, we should definitely keep in touch for the coming competition. Read each other's proposals and comment. Remind each other that it is just money, nothing to lose our heads over.

Congrats, pixiepixie. So... UofC has only just released MA results? Did you get an email from FGS or did you have to wait for your letter from SSHRC? This is so frustrating. I was hoping to find out my results before the next round of scholarship applications (all due today). I guess I had better work on that...

Thanks, Neatgirl. I appreciate it. I am just going crazy, here. Stinkin' Alberta. I can't believe that UofA is holding out, also. What is the point? FGS just keeps telling me that SSHRC will mail out letters next week. Seriously? The results are already a month late. If I have to wait for notification from SSHRC, I might be waiting until June. I just want to know either way what my status is. Waiting will not make me feel better if I didn't get a SSHRC.

Congratulations to everyone who has won a SSHRC! I'm so jealous of everyone who has had news. UofC is still holding onto the results and have no intention of letting anyone know anything anytime soon. What is there to "go through?" It's a list of names.

For anyone waiting on news from the University of Calgary... FGS got the results an hour ago and need to "go through the results" before sending out emails to students. Apparently, their computers have been down most of the day, as well, and this has been causing some delays. I couldn't get a timeline on when the results would be shared. Just "asap."

I would like to believe that last few weeks of SSHRC obsessing is a sign of my excellent research capabilities, but I am pretty sure that it just means that I need a hobby.

Obsessive googling: https://secure.nserc.ca/u_e.htm EDIT: If you go to Douglas College on the drop-down menu, you can see what the information looks like that the schools have access to. For whatever reason (loss of quota, maybe), this school does not need a password. I have to believe that if I had a real job, I wouldn`t know this.

    SSHRC

If you look at the secure website that the schools use, there is a drop-down menu that lists universities individually. All of the schools have different logons and passwords (what would I give for that information?), so I guess that the lists are posted one at a time for each individual school. By the way, congratulations revoltingmedievalist! You should be proud of yourself. Ack, so nervous... I`m just trying to prepare myself for bad news so that I won`t be incredibly disappointed.

I agree! Also, in my experience, my department and FGS are just as anxious as the grad students to have these results. They understand completely why we feel the need to call and ask if they have had any news. As for SSHRC... violet has said it all.

    SSHRC

Not to be the bad guy, but... SSHRC did say that doctoral results would be out the week of May 11th. Don't hit me.

It really depends on where you are applying from. My school took a big hit last year and had a less successful rate than those who apply direct. This means that our quota went down by quite a bit this year and made it much harder to get through the tiered ranking processes. I agree with jouissance that applying from within an institution has the direct advantage of workshops, seminars, and advisors for the students in the SSHRC process. However, I have also seen more than one student get a CGS without having any outside input. Mostly, I was thinking that since SSHRC is taking the advisory board's suggestions into account when making changes to the peer review process, this means that either they will eliminate the university rankings (which I consider unlikely) or create another ranking process for direct applicants. This might mean that applying directly will get that much harder in the years to come.

For anyone that is (ridiculously bored/obsessed and) interested, there is a review of SSHRC's peer review process on their website right now. This review was conducted by an international board that rated SSHRC amongst the top peer review granting agencies worldwide. The most interesting part of the review is that it breaks down the peer review process for the fellowship's competition, after our applications get to Ottawa. The second most interesting part is that this board believes that SSHRC should rethink its separate applications processes for those applying through a school and those applying direct. The international board saw this as an unfair process, working in the favour of those applying directly to SSHRC. Since those applicants that apply directly only have one round to go through before making the A-list, the board thought that this was an unfair advantage to those applying through schools who have to go through two rounds of ranking before making the A-list (departmental and university-wide). So, for those of you who applied direct, think of how lucky you are in the process even though you have to wait that much longer for results.

Okay, so the Master's results are out... but it's not over. I just got the strangest email. Check out the weirdness below:

Congratulations! Here's hoping for good news for all of the Master's students on this forum.

This email was forwarded to me and the date-stamp says that it was sent to the graduate coordinators at my school at 4:52pm. I don't see any info on when the awards administrator got the message (and sent it out), but I think that it was forwarded without delay. We have a huge scholarships competition that cannot release results until SSHRC results are out, so grad studies is pretty obsessed with keeping everyone up-to-date on news. Since I am in Alberta, I am guessing that anyone east of me will get news tomorrow. Time difference means that everyone at the eastern universities had probably already gone home by the time that this email was sent. Now, the only question remains is why SSHRC would tell people by email today that the doctoral results will be out on Monday or Tuesday and then send out a mass message to grad programmes saying May 11th.
  24. natalia

    SSHRC

Okay. I am guessing that a few of you may have already seen this, but I just got this from my grad chair.

Hey, you're welcome dood. I honestly didn't think that these stats would matter that much to anyone. My school is super hush-hush on quotas and I have no idea what their numbers look like. I just assumed that SSHRC put up the Master's stats because they don't list how many students applied within their school or how many students were sent out on the A-list. Oh, well. I'm glad that I got to bring excitement/anxiety/crazy into some lives.
