  3. I applied to Kean and responded to this question too. I totally found this SO FREAKING HARD to write and don't like this question. I like for things to be simple and straight forward and my first instinct was to relate it to Speech just like you. But I should say that I applied to Kean LAST yr and answered the same q and DID relate it to Speech and I did not get in. Now obviously I can't say thats the sole reason why I got rejected however I did hear thro a person in the the speech dept that the essay needs to be CREATIVE and really pull the audience's attention, which I heard mine did not do - and that is what they look for. Fresh and NOT boring and original. They are looking to see a different side of you. Its not meant to be a traditional personal statement for a reason. So just to throw it out there, for THIS year I did not really relate it to speech, only because it had to do directly with the moment in history I made a smallllll connection, but otherwise I chose a weird topic and I actually feel good about it!!! I did what I could and am hoping for the best. So I say: Do it on JFK, dinosaurs or any fun topic you like. Show them a side of you that you are proud of. Stand out
  4. Hey there! To those of you that applied to Monmouth I have a question. Do most of you have a BA in Speech or a lot of pre-reqs done? I wanted to apply there but got the idea that they prefer in-field applicants which I'm not so I stopped myself. Also been out of school for a while. Just curious though if most applicants are in fact Speech undergrads??
  5. I had one with a different school as well, a phone interview. It was very surprisingly casual.... and I have heard this about a couple other schools as well for their phone interviews. I prepared so much and we barely touched upon the things I planned. But it's always good to be prepared - better safe than sorry! No clue for in person interviews, I imagine they are much more intense.
  6. LOL That's my routine too!!! I feel crazy! I need this harsh winter to end so I can spend more time outdoors, busy with no time to think and most importantly - AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER! haha
  7. The job prospects are complicated but once your in a school - you are set. Tricky part is getting in. But even if you don't find a position in a school right away, you an always work at a university for counseling with the college level students too There are some options.
  8. Autismadvocate, I feel your pain, believe me. Not to freak you out even more but this is my third time applying for Speech programs and I have come to really associate the months of January through March/April with basic anxiety, waiting by the mail, waiting for my emails type of thing. I am an out of field applicant. My undergraduate degree is in Media Studies and Communications, so no where near related to Speech. I went back to school while I was working and took 5 pre-requisite classes for Speech and did very well. My undergrad GPA is average, my pre-req GPA is in the 3.8 range. So I felt more confident once those classes were done. In the past I have applied to schools mostly in NYC and NJ area (close to where I live), and schools in DC and Boston, which I found later to be SUPER SUPER competitive. I probably didn't do enough research because I probably should have aimed for schools that don't for example need all of the pre-reqs done, or for students to already have an undergraduate background in Speech (not me!). Anyway fast forward to right now, last summer I applied to 2 schools in Florida which are said to be "less competitive" but I chose them for their good reputations and because they have a higher acceptance rate and fill more seats than local schools. This fall season I applied to more local schools but was really choosy about which ones I went for, i.e. take students w/o a background. Sooo although I am no stranger to waiting, this time around the anxiety is still there BUT a little less. I tell myself its not the end of the world and something will somehow work out!!!! And you should too!!!! I found another profession I am interested in also which I have applied for so hopefully 1 of the 2 will work out for me. It's always a good idea to explore ALL of your options. I was very stubborn and feel like I wasted 2 years when maybe I coul dhave explored something else and been happy too. I got a lot of new experiences these last 2 years working in classrooms with kids with Learning Disabilities and really love being in this setting. So I figured maybe this happened for a reason for me? No matter where I end up I will be happy because I tried my best. At least I can't scold myself for being lazy. Of course hoping its SPEECH ! Best of luck DONT GIVE UP ON YOURSELF!
  9. I would give them a couple more days, sometimes it takes time for them to sort through items and update your profile. If it isn't there after a week I usually call. Good luck!
  10. I'm guessing they don't give any funding either? All of these expensive schools never do. Trying to go after our dreams and yet they make it so hard!
  11. Kean University in New Jersey deadline is 2/1 but you need 2-3 LORs
  12. Yup, they do have one. Go to my.ucf.edu and click on "Sign On." You need your PID and password to log on. If you don't have one, follow the links below it or I think you can call to ask how to get it. I think that's what I did originally. What semester did you apply for? I emailed them last week asking if there are any updates since November, no response yet! I hope they respond!
  13. Hi Guys, Just curious about the admissions process and wanting more info about Northwestern's speech program. I applied and it looks amazing. I know it is competitive as well. Anyone have anything to add? Thanks
  14. Hello All, I have a telephone interview with Nova next week and am wondering to those that know or have had an interview there, what kind of questions can I expect? Any tips or advice to prepare with? I would appreciate this!!! Thanks!!
  15. Hi guys, Anyone else Wait-Listed at Adelphi for speech? Anyone know if we have a chance of getting in? I am so anxious and want this so so much, like many of you I'm sure.
  16. Hi Hamby, I went to their graduate open house about a month ago. We took a tour of the clinic and it is really amazing. All newly built. We met the director of the program, she was very nice. From what we heard from students graduating from their program this year, they loved it. It's a close knit community and easy to develop good relationships with faculty. From what I saw I really liked it. Sorry I don't have more info. Good luck!
  17. Hey there, I haven't applied to Syracuse but my best friend is in the Speech Program there now. She started in the Fall and absolutely LOVES it. She says the faculty is amazing and the courses are great. It's a great school to be at. Best of luck to you
  18. My letters came from a professor, the vice principal of the school I work for and a speech therapist that I worked with for nearly a year. Some people say you should focus on getting more letters from professors than anywhere else. What do you think? As for my personal statement, I an really happy with it and feel it gives a great amount of information about myself and my goals. MystiqueSLP, although this cycle is over for applications if I don't get in I do plan on applying again. Would you mind reading my statement and giving me some feedback? I would really appreciate it, any help is always good especially from those that have been accepted. Who knows maybe I am doing something wrong.
  19. Hi All, It's my first time posting but I have been following this thread for a while. I'm a post-bacc student with 5 speech pre-requisite under my belt. This is my second year applying and have yet to hear any news other than a 'Wait-list'! It's very discouraging especially after switching careers and being really excited about this new path. My GRE scores and undergrad GPA are decent, post-bacc GPA 3.6. A lot of volunteer experience in 2 different settings for a year, the classes and I have been working as a teacher for kindergarten over the past year. Is anyone else experiencing this kind of luck with getting no where? I want this so badly and it's just so hard to keep seeing 'NO.' Anyone have any suggestions? Also, my other main question is: Has anyone heard anything or know anything about Adelphi and their program? Or the wait-list? How about William Paterson? Is it just me or are they taking a long time this year? I haven't heard a yes or a no from them and it's been months.
  20. Hey guys, So I was curious if anyone applying for next fall has encountered any strange SOP questions to answer. I'm applying to one school that is asking to address this question within my statement: if I had traveled back in history, at what point would I stop and why. Talk about bizarre. I have no idea how to even address this; do I tie this into my personal statement somehow, relate it to Speech? Or answer genuinely in a seperate paper? Or just devote a paragraph to it? Thoughts?
  21. Hi All, Has anyone had to deal with a strange topic to write about for their SOP? I am currently applying to one school that is asking a question about what time in history I would stop at if I could travel back in time. I'm a little confused on how I can answer this: am I supposed to relate this to the program I am applying to somehow? Or just give them a genuine answer and my reasons? If so, am I still supposed to include standard information about myself and the program I am apply to as well? H-E-L-P... This is so stressful.
  22. Thanks everyone for your words and encouragement! I am sure we can all do it - just keep going back and reading your SOPs and editing gets easier that way. I have been cutting it down significantly and I feel a little better about it. KCald- Thank you so much for your tips!!! I have been using them as I edit and I find they are making a huge difference. Good luck to all
  23. Hello, This is my second time around applying to the SLP programs at various schools. I find my biggest struggle is writing the personal statement! I have plenty of content, but it is always entirely too long (3.5 pages). Does anyone have any tips or pointers on how to shorten it? I've included my journey to speech (I am a career changer), one or two personal anecdotes, why I am interested in BLANK school and what I hope to do after graduating. Also, does anyone know if I can use the abbreviations "SLP" in place of speech language pathologist throughout the essay? I find that these words take up a lot of space within the essay. Thank you in advance!!!
  24. Hi All, I have a question regarding sending GRE scores. Let's say you applied one year and sent your GRE scores to your schools but did not get in and you decided to apply again the following year to many of the Same schools. Do schools hang on to your GRE scores or are we required to send them all over again? Anyone have experience with this?
