Anyone hear from or know anything about Kean yet??? -
I have an interview coming up in a week and was wondering if anyone had any insight to share on what to expect?! I am new to this field and don't know many people to ask for advice. All I know is its a group interview lasting about an hour with 2 faculty members. Never been part of a group interview either so even advice for that would be helpful. Any thoughts?!

Your welcome! Good luck

Northwestern University Admissions
Sunshine5535 replied to Sunshine5535's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Anyone know how we will be hearing about admissions decisions this year? Looks like its Northwestern's first year using the CSDCAS so I'm curious as to how they will notify us since they used to do it through their own website. Any ideas?? -
Hi, I am most likely attending a program this fall in the Fort Lauderdale/Davie area. I've only ever visited Fort L so I don't have a good sense of what it would be like to actually live there. Any recommendations for areas/apartment complexes to look at? How is life living there in general, expensive? Are there things to do in the area?

I love this thread! What an awesome way to ease our anxieties and get to know one another Hi everyone! My name is Mina (like the actress Mina Suvari) and I'm born n' raised in New York City. I'm 27 years old. My undergrad is in Communication and Media Studies from Fordham University. I graduated with an entirely different path in mind after interning within the media and worked in book publishing for a while until I discovered Speech through a manuscript I was editing. I took a course in Speech at a nearby school to see how I would feel about it and loved it! So I continued and took a few more pre-reqs. Eventually I left the publishing world and pursued Speech more actively. Since then I have had experience volunteering in the speech department at a nursing facility, a private sensory therapy clinic for children, I worked as a teaching assistant at a public school and this past year I have been an assistant teacher for kids at a private school with learning disabilities. My current position has been immensely challenging BUT I can't believe the amount of experience I have gained. I never thought I would end up in a teaching role but here I am and It's been a blessing! I've been trying to get into a masters program for 3 long years. It's been a rough journey but this time around I finally have one acceptance to a school so hooray!!! I am hoping for more so that I at least have a local option too. My goals are to eventually work as an SLP in a school similar to the one I am at now. I love the community schools represent On a more personal level, I'm fluent in Arabic and have a strong passion for the Middle East, which is where my roots are and my heart is <3. My dreams would be to take my speech degree and eventually work in the Middle East to help kids who don't have access to therapy. Fun fact: I'm obsessed with the Lifetime channel and am anxiously waiting for the shows Devious Maids and The Client List to start up again with new seasons!!! Who's up next?! Let's keep this rolling!

I called UCF today actually because I am pretty anxious myself. They said they are currently meeting and making decisions and all of them for this summer will go out by the beginning of April. That's coming soon, hope they stick to it! Good luck!

Hi Jamie!! So let me just say the situation you are in is much more common than you know. First thing is first, do not feel like you will be behind or not up to the same level as other people entering Education. Let me give you a little bit of background about my situation before I go further. So I have been on a Speech Pathology degree chase for the past 3 years. I have been rejected from so many schools for God knows what reasons. My background is not in Speech so that may have been the case for certain schools I applied to that preferred a student from the field. However, Speech is very, very specific about these things in ways that Education is not. Anyway fast forward to right now. To boost my candidacy I have been an Assistant Teacher for the past 2 years, one in a public school and one in a private school for special education. My goal is to eventually work with kids in a school setting so this has been a huge blessing. Being where I am now and talking to many different kinds of people, I have learned that the teachers I work with have come with all different types of backgrounds and many started with no experience whatsoever. Including myself. I was from a Communication and Media studies undergrad background with experience in book publishing - not exactly the "ideal" candidate for teaching. And it's been several years since I graduated from my undergrad. But it didn't stop me from beginning to transition to another field that I better enjoy. And it shouldn't stop you either!! I found this thread by the way because my other option is also School Counseling. I applied to 3 schools in that field in addition to the Speech schools in my signature. But I too have noticed how hard it is to find a position in counseling and Speech will always be my preferred path so we will see where I end up with that. But nonetheless I just want to say: experience or no experience, know that other people are in a similar boat. My only suggestion to you and this REALLY helped me make the decision about whether or not to get an actual teaching degree, is try and ask local schools if you can observe some of their classrooms. Try the different age groups you think you might be interested in and spend some time with the class for a few days. Don't be afraid to reach out. To be quite honest and this is JUST me, I was feeling so down after my first 2 years of rejections from Speech and hadn't yet discovered School Counseling, that I was listening to everybody's suggestions that I should just "go be a teacher". But let me tell you, it is not the easy career, or one that people can default to "just because." Once I got into the field and realllllly taught and managed a classroom, it was a totally different feeling. I love my kids and am so thankful for the experience I am gaining from my job but it just made me realize that my personality is better suited with a smaller group of students rather than managing a whole group. So if you can, go out there and see things with your own eyes before committing yourself to the field just to make sure you want it. And I really hope you do! This post is not meant to discourage you in any way. It's such a wonderful field and so very rewarding, but it's always good to go for a test drive. Anyway, best of luck to you. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me at any time

Interview Prep - Fall 2014
Sunshine5535 replied to sheranik's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hi Jmeister! Just curious when did you interview and then hear back from Nova? I have been waiting over a month for a response it's driving me crazy! Also, are you doing the online distance program or on campus? -
Contacting Professors?
Sunshine5535 replied to ballerina18's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I say go for it! I recently did for a school that I am still waiting to get a decision from. I am going to sit in on one of the professor's lectures to see what it would be like to be in the school and hopefully make a good in person impression!! She was very welcoming and I take that as a good sign. I say show interest in any way possible at this point, as long as you do it correctly it can't hurt. Good luck! -
Programs Still accepting..
Sunshine5535 replied to smartypants14's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
University of Central Florida and Nova Southeastern U are rolling admissions. They admit a few times a year. So the quicker you send in, the quicker you get some type of response They both need LORs though. I believe almost all the programs do. -
I also applied last year and I just went back to look and they emailed my rejection on March 15, 2013. So we still have a few weeks. Hoping this year its positive news!

Not yet! From my experience from last year, I heard more in March. I wish that time would get here already! -
OMG it sounds like both nova and ucf were nightmares to deal with for you. I'm sorry you had to go through all of that but happy for you that you got accepted somewhere you are much more comfortable! Congratulations!
-
You will have to reapply unless they tell you something like "We don't have any spots left for the Fall but we are pushing you to the Spring/Summer start date"..
-
UCF has summer acceptances as well, because they are rolling admissions
-
Thanks for your response and input!! So what is it like living in FL full time? I'm not sure if you are a native or just there for school.. I have only visited several times but I wonder what it's like to be there full time. I'm only used to NYC but I'm sure going anywhere from this point would be a huge adjustment.
-
Wow thanks SO much for all of this information! You are so helpful!!! I am interested in working with literacy and articulation. I didn't apply to those other FL schools but UCF's list looks good to me! I've actually heard the opposite. That FL schools are easier to get in to because they accept more people than bigger city schools. For example, NYC schools are almost impossible to get in to because everybody wants to come to NY to study. FL is said to be a less sought out state in comparison to bigger states. In our case I hope I am right so we can get acceptances lol
-
Yay!! Same club When did you apply to UCF? I am waiting to hear back and it's so stressful. I applied back in the summer and I noticed in November people started hearing back, my portal status just says "No Decision." I just want a response!
-
Oh boy I have heard similar of Nova but I went and visited the program and actually really liked it! So lets see what happens. For UCF, are those people in Speech specifically or just speaking in general about the school? I was wondering about the area of the school too and the living situation in the area. I've never seen the campus in person but it seems great!

Hi guys! Let's talk Florida schools. Anyone else apply to UCF or Nova? Any thoughts about either of these schools/programs?
