  1. Thanks again everyone! I changed the font to Garamond and everything fit neatly on to ten pages.
  2. I made a post about this question, before realizing that these sort of things should go in this thread. I apologize. My question is about UConn. Does anyone know how long the SOP should be for UConn? I have searched the website and called the school. The most I've gotten is that I need to make sure the essay covers the information in the prompt. I'm hoping someone who has applied there past or present has an idea how long is acceptable for a Statement of Purpose. Thank you in advance.

  4. Thank you for the responses. I will keep the MLA format and just cut where I can and eventually get it down to ten pages.Thank you again!
  5. Should my writing sample be typical MLA format? I need to cut my paper down to 10 pages. If I adjust the font to 11.5 it is ten pages. However, I'm not sure I can do that. Should I assume that the school wants my writing sample to follow MLA formatting The school itself doesn't say anything about paper format.
  6. I just wanted to add that I went to Western Washington for my B.A. there is a great group of professors with interest in Science Fiction in their literature department.
  7. How serious is it if you go over the word count for your Statement of Purpose? I am supposed to only write 750 words, but at the moment I cannot seem to cut to more than 800 words. Do schools really count the number of words?
  8. I would also like to know if anyone is willing to read a SOP for an M.A. program? I think I am struggling because I am unsure how specific I should be for an M.A. program.
  9. Thank you for all the advice. I will look into San Francisco State as well.
  10. I have a second question. Hopefully someone can help with this one. I want to focus my graduate studies on the work of postmodern women minority writers in regards to science fiction. Is that too specific of a research topic to put in my statement of purpose? Is there a better or more concise way to word my area of interest? I feel like every time I try to explain my focus it becomes too wordy and cumbersome.
  11. Espresso Shut (or anyone who might know the answer) Sorry if this is a bad question, but does a MS in English make a big difference? If I get into a program and they say, “Oh you’re really getting an M.S. instead of an M.A” does that, make a huge difference? I have no desire to do a PhD program. The Masters is going to be it. And thank you for the advice I will look into SUNY Buffalo.
  12. Hello, I am in the process of researching and applying to an English M.A. program. I have a few questions and do not know anyone else who has done the graduate school application experience. I have a B.A. in English Lit. and Secondary Education with a minor in Teaching English as a Second language. I have spent the last two years working for non-profits that focus on teaching reading to K-12 students. Now that I want to focus on going back to school, I realized I need foreign language experience. I did not take any foreign language in undergrad. I did spend a summer teaching English in Mexico but I am sure that is not enough to pass any proficiency exams. So I am looking for M.A. programs without language requirements. Also, I am debating on focusing on the work of American minority women writers (postmodern) or if I want to focus on media and theory. I would like advice or suggestions for possible programs I should look into. Possible schools (In no particular order) University of Maryland Loyola University Chicago UConn Villanova St. Louis University Kent State Rochester University Carnegie Mellon Syracuse Northwestern Rutgers
  13. Hello everyone, Im new here and hopefully I am doing this right. I am applying to English M.A. programs for fall 2013. However, I don't have much language experience, I don't think I could pass a language exam and I did not take any languages in my undergrad. Foolish I know but I was not planning on continuing my education at the time. Does anyone know of any English programs that do not have a forgein language requirement for their English M.A. programs? Thank you Brooke
