Should I take the money?
BrookeSnow replied to BrookeSnow's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I want to teach high school English. I already have my teaching degree but I would be better equipped with an M.A. I also really want to explore things like publishing etc. Sorry if this doesn't make the most sense I've got a jumble of things I want to do. -
I have a fully funded M.A. offer from Kent State. This includes a Graduate Asistantship and a stipend. I got into some other schools with really good M.A. programs but the likelihood of funding is pretty dismal. I like Kent State's program and I'm not aiming to go for a Phd after this. So should I stop going back and forth and take the funded offer?

It's been a while since this thread was updated. I am looking into Kent State for the fall and was hoping to find some current information about apartments and the town itself.

Funding at second choice vs. No Funding at First choice
BrookeSnow replied to rokdrokd's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Thanks for asking this question. I have the same problem. First choice school unfunded, second choice school funded....It should be obvious yet I'm still torn. -
This does help. I'm also wait-listed for funding and trying to make a decision. I have a funded offer for an MA elsewhere but I really love Villanova's program so I'm torn.

Are there any former or current Kent State people out there? I am considering an offer for their M.A. program and would like some information about the culture of the program. Or if you are considering Kent State some information about what drew you to their program. Also any tips on places to visit or things to check out in the town. I would like any insights people have to offer. Thanks in advance.

Ah, thanks. I was looking at the Convention center as a place to stay good to know it's really not too far from campus.

Macabry- I am planning a trip out to Villanova, in about a week. Any suggestions for things I should check out?
-
Congrats that is great!

Has anyone heard anything about funding?

Post-Acceptance Stress & Misc. Banter
BrookeSnow replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yes, nothing. But this is the school that had the most difficult application. I had to have my recommendations sent 4 separate times to three different email addresses for the school to get the letters. -

I don't know, it was a voicemail and the office was closed when I called back. I'm really curious to know what happened. -

Has anyone had this happen to them? I I got a phone call from a school wanting to know why I had not responded to their acceptance offer. I did not receive an email or letter from them. Has anyone gotten into a program and was not notified? -
The Dreaded Un-Funded MA
BrookeSnow replied to skybythelight's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm not sure. I want to clarify that I am excited about receiving even a partially funded offer. I just still have the possibility of other funding from some other schools. -
The Dreaded Un-Funded MA
BrookeSnow replied to skybythelight's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
....and just went back and looked at the acceptance email. It says "the offer of admission to the Master of Arts in Literary and Cultural Studies program for a full-time student includes a tuition scholarship" It kind of sounds standard but I'm not sure. -

Yes, CMU offered me a quarter-tuition scholarship. So I don't know if that is standard or the money amount went down because of other factors. -
The Dreaded Un-Funded MA
BrookeSnow replied to skybythelight's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks for asking this question. I am in a similar spot. I might have to do an unfunded MA or a MA with very little funding ( think 3,000 out of 38,000). I don't have any undergrad debt and do not plan on doing a Phd so I'm not sure and unfunded MA scares me as much as it might otherwise. -

In at Carnegie Mellon (MA) with some funding. -
Thank you!
-
Thank you. I was pretty sure they didn't, that was going to be my research project when I got home from work today. The other schools ( Syracuse and Villanova) told me that I would be informed of funding in mid-march. I'm waiting on those two.
-
I got into three schools which is like YAY. However, I'm waiting on funding. Two of the schools told me they make funding decisions in mid-March. I feel like I cannot make decisions until I know about funding.
