Anyone applied/thinking of applying to Harvard?
Conscia Fati replied to Fockatar's topic in Classics
Wow! That is a crazy high stipend! I'm jealous.... -
And you all should check this out: http://whatshouldwecallgradschool.tumblr.com

Good luck to those of you who have interviews coming up! And my two cents: it doesn't really matter if you email grad students or not. If you have some questions or just want to get to know them a little beforehand, go for it!

Here's a link to send a letter to Congress to ask for more funding. I doubt that it will do any good, but you never know! http://www.congressweb.com/cweb2/index.cfm/siteid/nha

Is it true that the Javits may be open to new applicants for 2013-14?

Congrats to all who are posting their interviews/acceptances on the results board! Very exciting stuff.

Oh my goodness! I feel silly now. What a cool blog!

Placenta. Hehe. I'm sorry, I couldn't help but giggle a little. I'm guessing you meant polenta.
-
Btw, rsmease -- I took a look at the blog attached to your profile page. Amazing. I'm especially fond of the graham cracker/Nutella Trojan horse.

Somebody give the man an upvote. I'm out for the day.

I tend to agree with you -- I'm rather fond of the old fashioned American Philological Association. I do wonder if they will ever be able to agree upon a different name, though. I'm going to be a little sad if/when APA changes to something else.
-
Ciistai, you're absolutely right. It is just APA that is considering the name change. http://apaclassics.org/index.php/apa_blog/apa_blog_entry/3948/

So random question: what do y'all think about the proposed name change of APA/AIA?
-
Oh! I didn't even think of searching for "ancient." Don't give up hope just yet, though! You never know if they stagger acceptances or if they might still be working on their wait list.

I have heard that Princeton and Yale have extended interviews.

Thanks, everybody. The semester turned out really well.

Please don't be so rude, IQ. There's really no point in being mean-spirited on an online forum. Besides, I know we have more in common than you think -- like a love for Latin literature! Really, let's put politics aside -- and best of luck to you and your partner and all of your apps. Pax.

Is Anyone Going to Read Your Writing Sample At All?
Conscia Fati replied to villina's topic in Writing Samples
I think they definitely read samples in the humanities. I saw a professor from Ivy League University X at a party who complimented me on the writing sample I submitted (he was one of my POIs). Even though I was rejected from University X, he obviously had read my writing sample and went out of his way to tell me how much he liked it. I am relatively certain that I got into the programs I did *because* of my writing sample. -
I got a 6 on the AW section, and I don't really know why, either. I only took the GRE once. I didn't practice -- and I actually made up data to support my argument! I think it's all a little silly. As long as you're around a 5, I don't think it matters too much, especially if your writing sample is good.
