I agree with you. I am also interested in Continental Philosophy and it was a struggle to realize that the schools that were strong in my AOI were ignored if not bashed by Leiter. I am not saying that Leiter's rankings are not useful, but I take them with a grain of salt, especially when it comes to continental philosophy. Seriously, the guy calls my advisor Alan Schrift a "mediocre" Nietzsche scholar in his blog, when Schrift is the main editor of Stanford's upcoming 19-volume translation of the Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche. Even if I know that I shouldn't care about Leiter's rankings because of its biased methodology against continental philosophy (and particularly SPEP schools), I often regret not having applied to more top-25 programs (I guess we can't really escape the desire for recognition). But then again, I would not enjoy having to take the majority of my classes in analytic topics, even if I could work with one or two professors who specialize in what I like.

I don't know if this makes a difference for you, but it's probable that i won't be accepting Fordham's offer as I am very interested in Penn State's offer. I will probably also take myself off the DePaul waitlist soon.

Hi, I am strongly considering attending Penn State next fall. I've read that Park Forest is a good area for graduate students. I found this website http://www.apartmentsstatecollege.com/penn-state-housing/psu/Park-Forest-Apartments/id/47 which lists 1-bedroom apts for $705. Is that a good price for State College? What other areas would you recommend? Companies/websites I should look into? Thanks in advance!

That's awesome TAGraves! Congrats!!

accepted to fordham!!
-
Yeah, that makes sense. I really hope you get accepted, since it looks like you didn't have good luck with your other applications. Good luck!

I think we can assume that. 6 waitlists and 0 acceptances in the Results page seems to imply that they've only gone through the waitlist. However, I think it's weird that they would release the waitlist before their acceptances. Shouldn't they already know who they are accepting if they have already determine the waitlist?

It might be because I come from a liberal arts college, but I would love to get a teaching position at one of those institutions. At research universities you always have the pressure to publish like crazy (if you don't publish x amounts of books and y amounts of articles you are denied tenure), whereas at liberal arts colleges you just need to publish a couple of articles in well-regarded journals and be good at teaching. You can still get to discuss cool stuff at upper-level classes. Again, that is my dream. But, like zizesucks says, it's probably more realistic to assume that I'll end up somewhere else.

Congrats to the Georgetown acceptance and the Fordham waitlist! Looking back, I should have applied to Georgetown. Please Fordham call me or send me an e-mail!!

Writing sample: does it have to be on your AOI?

I'm interested in your criticisms of Honneth's book on reification, if you don't mind sharing. -
Writing sample: does it have to be on your AOI?

Thanks for all your comments. Just here, it looks like I have really tough competition for the Continental spot at Columbia (hopefully my Spinoza paper won't put me at a disadvantage vis-a-vis other people with my interests and who submitted a paper on their AOI). Good luck to everyone! -
I am looking forward to Columbia releasing its acceptances. However, looking back at my application, I am concerned that my writing sample might be detrimental to my overall file. I am mostly interested in Continental philosophy and I made that clear in my SOP (working with Honneth and Neuhouser would be a dream come true). However, given that I discovered philosophy quiet late in my college career, I didn't have a writing sample on a topic that most people in the adcom would be familiar with (the other paper I had ready was on existentialism and structuralism). At that point, I was still working on my senior thesis about Honneth's theory of recognition, which would have been the perfect writing sample. In the end, I sent a paper on Spinoza's conception of eternity in the Ethics. I am proud of that paper and there are two faculty members at Columbia who work on Spinoza. My main worry is that my choice of writing sample will look weird in the context of my overall application (interests in Continental philosophy and political philosophy). What do people think? Does the writing sample necessarily have to be on your main philosophical interest (or at least tied to it in a tangential way?) Or is it enough that it reflects a good philosophical potential? Thanks and good luck to everyone.

I know that Vanderbilt has a waitlist that consists of two people. However, I don't know if they have released it yet. I don't know anything about Penn State's waitlist but it seems there is at least one person that got waitlisted (according to the results page). If you got the interview and haven't heard back yet, maybe you should maintain a moderate optimism. Best of luck!

Thank you. Good luck with all your other applications!

Just got admitted to Penn State!!

It's good to hear positive stories about the job market. I know this doesn't go precisely with the original title of the post, but I am even more concerned about the job market because I am planning to study Continental philosophy. As most of us know, there are only a bunch of schools in the U.S that specialize in Continental philosophy (so there are not very many positions available in the field). Looking at the placement records of some of the top continental programs is a little scary because only a few people end up teaching at top universities or good liberal arts colleges. Perhaps, having an AOI or AOS in the history of philosophy (generally better-regarded at Leiter-ranked programs) would help in my job prospects?

Same here. The philosophy department at my college just went through a very long hiring process to replace a professor who is retiring next year. A member of the faculty told me that they had around 500 applications!! In the end, the three people that made it to the end and who were able to visit campus to give a talk were all from top programs and had already been teaching for 5+ years. There was a guy who had published several articles and books and didn't even have a tenure-track job. Academia is a scary prospect, but I am still willing to take the risk if I can do what I love.

Essex has a really good program in Continental philosophy. Actually, I think you can still apply there for this admission cycle. The deadlines for applying for funding already passed, however. They also request a very detailed plan of study to accompany your application. As opposed to U.S. programs, it seems that UK programs require you to have a better idea of what it is exactly that you want to study even before you get into grad school.

Question about applying to Phd program from same school's MA program.
AcademicX replied to logos0516's topic in Philosophy
So what's the point of your posts? Many people here "did darn good work in the department, and have a darn good writing sample, and letters of recommendation from faculty in that very same department (or other good departments). It's kinda hard to reject someone when the people down the hall (or other well-regarded academics they see at conferences) are saying "let him in." Many people here have incredibly good credentials and yet they will be denied admission to Grad School. We are all nervous about the application season, but I don't see how showing off your credentials to us will help you get into the program of your preference. You obviously already made a decision on how to organize your applications. You're not so much asking for advice, as trying to find validation of your previous decisions (and getting mad when people don't agree with you). Nothing of what is said here will change your chances of getting in; that is up to the adcomms. So i suggest you to find other ways to vent your stress. Best of luck in your applications. -
Come on man...no need to bash us Continentals. I took a class on philosophy of mind and I really liked it; I'm just not that interested in it. As you say, we can respect good philosophy but not be super interested in it. As young philosophers we should be the ones breaking up this silly analytic/continental divide. For example, if you read someone like Habermas, you would see that he's committed to working with empirical and objective data (of course, he was very much influence by American Pragmatism). No ill feelings, though. I also dislike Zizek. I think he gives Continental philsophy a bad name.

I miss d.findly...Especially now that the forums are so quiet.

The videos are awesome! the guy's French accent is almost unbearable, though.

Congrats! Miami University (OH) consistently sends students to top Contiental philosophy programs!

I claim one of the Emory acceptances. I got a call from John Lysaker yesterday evening. 5-year fellowship! So excited!!!

I want to believe that Emory will release its acceptances tomorrow (based on past years' dates)!!
