Read the book "The Last Enchantments" by Charles Finch. I know that sounds off-topic, but I swear its not! It will make you want to live on campus for sure!
  2. I would say forget about it the second semester of the year, that stuff typically gets locked down around now for the entire year. I've never known of anyone to get funding for the second half of an academic year. Not to say it isn't possible, just improbable. Did you talk to current students about what they have done and seen in the department? Are there other places you could do hourly work like "reading" (grading) midterms and exams? Have you asked about the percentage of students in the program who are funded in the first year? And beyond? Will you pay in-state or out of state tuition? What can your lifestyle afford? Do you have previous student loans? etc, etc. But does the department have any grants or anything on the table? My school has gone through budget cuts and does not have a lot of available funding right now. That means we have very few incoming students because they are (understandably) unwilling to take the risk of being unfunded. Ironically we will most likely have an overabundance of funding come September because we have a number of grants out, which will likely give us 3-6 funded positions for nexy year - we just won't know for sure until June or later. Keep bugging (not literally, be polite) people and you may have a shot before the school year commences.
  3. Clarify with them if this is a fellowship (essentially free money) or an assistantship. They may not have a specific job for you yet and that is why. But getting in touch with them about what they expect from you is a good idea.
  4. Well first of all.... EdS or PhD? Generally: Make sure it's NASP (or APA) accredited. Money is always good! Although not at the expense of other things. But scholarships/funding/in-state tuition should be a huge plus. Make sure faculty are supportive (although I would have said they were at my school before I chose it and I was wrong). Look at their data - do they have a good retention rate? Or do folks drop out? usually you'll see this for PhD programs, but if you're EdS and there's an attached PhD program you should check it out - it'll still give you good info. What about internship placement (paid) rate? Do they focus on the kinds of things you want to? (assessment, etc.) Will they prepare you for the kind of job you want? (more straight forward with EdS) Are the field experiences they provide ones that you are comfortable with? For example, in my program we are placed in inner-city schools. I'm fine with it, but it is not for everyone. eta: be in touch with current students if you can! I asked for the email address of a student at every school I interviewed just to hear the student perspective. I got a few emails this year from people and I always answered them honestly. Good luck! PM me if you need anything or want to talk specifics.
  5. This. My tuition remission won't cover any class that doesn't count toward my degree (which an undergrad language course wouldn't). However, at my SO's school they can do that with no issues, so just look into your university's policies on it.
  6. They will place a hold on anything over $1k for a check, I assume $2500 is for wiring it. I don't have much advice, does your current US bank have any partners in Canada? You could keep the majority of money in your US account (if you use a credit card or something with no international fees then you only need a Canadian account for cash). That's what I did. I use my credit card for almost everything since I get such good rewards from it, then use the Canadian bank account for direct deposit from the university. If you do switch over everything, look into an Airmiles card and use it for everything! eta: Also some Canadian banks are in the US: BMO (my recommendation) and TD as far as I know. Scotia Bank may have a partnership with Bank of America, but I didn't like banking with them ad switched in favor of BMO.
  7. I think there are definitely places that would suit your interests other than UCB! I am definitely sure about the funding, although you can always ask. 7 years of funding is a lot to give students, so it's not surprising.
  8. Nope, not happy. The profs told another student who was in the same boat that he had better focus on what the department was doing now instead of what they used to do. That in my opinion is completely unforgivable.
  9. This is a question for a professor. I suggest you contact one soon so you can make the necessary improvements. That being said, I would not recommend UC Berkeley's program to anyone! I actually lived in Berkeley, one mile from the Ed building when I was applying... and didn't even bother with applying there. Their program is long (7 years), not funded, and the professors (aside from Worrell) are not.... uh, the greatest? I don't really want to piss anyone off, but I have had multiple professors from other schools who do not say great things about Berkeley's program. The school as a whole is obviously good, but I really wouldn't recommend applying to SP there. You're far better off applying to UCSB which has a great program! What are your research interests? I assume you are going for a PhD since UCB does not offer EdS...
  10. It sounds like you don't even want to go to school B, so why wait for them? If that is the case, just accept School A. If you are really hoping for School B because it's your dream or something, then wait til April 14 before accepting School A. That gives you the max amount of time to figure out if you got off the waitlist at School B.
  11. YES, call. Tell them April 15 is coming up and you have some decisions to make (even if that is a lie) and you would like to know your status so that you are better able to make a decision.
  12. This happened to me! But there's no way to foresee it.
  13. I don't think it should matter, but if you feel it might (i.e. for a job interview, etc.) you can just wear long sleeves. Shouldn't be a big deal! Hopefully you'll be wearing long sleeves to important functions like interviews anyway.
  14. The times they are a changin'...

  15. Sounds like you would be a good candidate! Just work on crafting a very good essay. But from my experience SP programs tend to like international students.
  16. Just found out my funding might be cut for next year

  17. What happens for most people with funding is that their tuition is paid for by the department and they receive an additional stipend (salary) in exchange for TA/RA duties.
  18. I would say the 3 week mark is cause to worry. In this case since April 15 is coming up, I think April 1 (or maybe this Friday) is a good bet. Then you should think about emailing them back to ask.
  19. Internship is something you interview for and choose, so I really wouldn't worry about that yet. You should also be able to do that in any state you want to. It's good if everyone has cars - you can get rides places. Also don't forget about Uber/Lyft! Even if you use it a lot it will cost you less than having a car would.
  20. They told me straight out via email I had been waitlisted.
  21. I say Texas, since NYC seems ridiculously unaffordable when you are already paying for school. Did you talk to the school about their practicum requirements? That is the only time when not having a car (or permit) might be problematic. But hopefully they will be willing to work with you. My program (not in TX) has two people without cars.
  22. I would just say, "I'm sorry, my circumstances have changed and I will no longer be attending School X. Thank you." Just leave it at that. It's none of their business why.
  23. You would have to ask Counseling and Clinical people. As for where to apply try Ayse Ciftci at Purdue (Counseling Psych) and Markeda Newell at Loyola Chicago (School Psych)
  24. Yes, very, as far as I know. My program doesn't guarantee it, but everyone has had it for the past 20 years so that was good enough for me. I don't think there are (m)any schools in the position to guarantee it for a full 5-7 years.
  25. It's not any different between domestic/international students in school psych, as far as I am aware...
